Sessions: Food stamp spending up 100 percent since Obama took office

The vast majority of federal spending in the Senate farm bill, which is estimated to cost over $100 billion annually, is going toward food stamps, representing a 100 percent increase since President Barack Obama took office, according to Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions.

“This legislation will spend $82 billion on food stamps next year, and an estimated $770 billion over the next ten years. To put these figures in perspective, we will spend $40 billion federal dollars next year on roads and bridges,” said Sessions, the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.

“Food stamp spending has more than quadrupled since the year 2001. It has increased 100 percent since President Obama took office,” he said.

Federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program has doubled since 2008 which accounts for 80 percent of the farm bill’s cost, according to an analysis of Congressional Budget Office and White House Office of Management and Budget data conducted by the Senate Budget Committee’s Republican staff.

Crop insurance, commodities and conservation make up the remaining 20 percent of the legislation.

In 2008 the SNAP program cost taxpayers $39 billion, according to the analysis.

Debate on the five-year farm bill began on Thursday in the Senate.

“When the food stamp program was first expanded nationwide, about 1 in 50 Americans received food stamp benefits. Today, nearly one in 7 Americans are on food stamps,” Sessions said in a floor speech.

KEYWORDS:
We have a rule at the food bank where I'm a triage interviewer: if you're on food stamps, you must supply a Department of Social Services (DSS) Household Summary Report. This report details unearned income (SSI, FI, etc.), other programs where the client may be getting benefits (WIC for example), etc.

I look at lots of these and can verify the article. Food stamp payments have exploded!

Of course food stamp fraud has also exploded. I've had folks admit during the interview to food stamp fraud, even explain how they do it. And they'll never get caught as there's no oversight.

IMHO, a waste of our tax dollars.

The entitlement mentality is strongly embedded in most folks I speak with. Many of them have an obamaphone (that's what they call it), a free cell phone with 250 minutes of free calling per month. Of course, when they get their free phone they disconnect their pay-for telephone line. Why should they pay $30-50/month for that when they can talk for free courtesy of nobama?

Very interesting insights you have.

I’ve always wondered when I hear the constant MSM drone of “there are so many hungry people, kids are going to bed hungry, we need to take care of hungry people”

And we’ve had WIC and food stamps for decades, and these programs just keep expanding.

There is no reason for anyone to go hungry in Aiken County, SC where I live.

We have a brochure we pass out at the food bank. It's titled, "Free Meals in Aiken County." If you have transportation you can get three meals a day, seven days a week. And most of the free meal places don't have any prerequisites.

Unfortunately some of the "entitled" will visit more than one place for a meal, then stop by Wally and buy more food with their food stamps. And that's why they are obese.

Let’s not forget about the people who get paid under the table and then collect welfare, food stamps, medicaid, etc..... It’s disgusting. The only way to stop this is to stop government assistance at the Federal level. Let’s stop the disability fraud as well.

A local tv station here in Indianapolis was able to get a computer file of purchase locations where Indiana welfare electronic credit cards had been used. This was not food stamps but supplementary assistance.

There were expenditures all over the country, Vegas, Hawaii, Disney World, Puerto Rico, etc. Casinos, horse tracks, Nevada brothels, etc.

Un-freaking-believable.

Why are Food Stamps part of Agriculture & blended in with crop payments to farmers??

Seems to me it should be part of HHS.

Where does Welfare get handled?? Section 8 housing??
Free “Obamaphones”???

Obama today: “The private sector is doing fine”.......

The Food Stamp program has more than doubled under Obama.

Cannot both be correct.

I’ve interviewed hundreds of low income people. They have complained about lots of stuff. But none of them have complained about being hungry.
