A bitter dispute over whether the University of North Dakota should save or scrap its Fighting Sioux nickname headed to voters on Tuesday, even as supporters of the moniker pledged another battle this fall regardless of the outcome.
The issue has been simmering on the campus for several decades but boiled over seven years ago when UND was placed on a list of schools with American Indian nicknames the NCAA deemed hostile and abusive. Those colleges were told to dump the monikers or risk sanctions against their athletic teams.
Voters in Tuesday's North Dakota primary will be asked whether to uphold or reject the Legislature's repeal of a state law requiring the school to continue using the nickname and American Indian head logo. A yes vote would seemingly retire the nickname, but even that may be temporary.
As its members urged state residents on Monday to vote to keep the name, a group that called itself the Committee for Understanding and Respect circulated petitions for a second referendum. That measure would change the state constitution to declare UND forever be known as the Fighting Sioux.
"Our second phase, and our ultimate goal, is the November ballot," the group said in a statement.
Sean Johnson, spokesman for the nickname supporters, said his group will "keep plugging away" on the second referendum no matter what happens during Tuesday's primary. He predicted the vote would be close.
Some schools quickly removed their American Indian-themed nicknames when faced with NCAA pressure, and others such as Florida State survived the edict by getting approval from namesake tribes. However, there was no such consensus among tribal leaders in North Dakota.

Us Libtards heap offended when white man disrespect-em Indians!
How about “Negotiating Sioux” if “Fighting Sioux” is offensive?
I thought this kinda junk went out in the Sixties. Someone needs to get a life.
if they want a name changed, they should come up with the money and signatures it takes to put it on the ballot. It should not be just "Change the Name". It should include the new name they want to sell to the voters.
If it is passed they should be responsible for all the expenses associated with changing the name: legal fees, contracts, schedules, school signs, scoreboards, gymnasium floors, uniforms, cheer leader outfits, insurance contracts, etc.
Change the name to something catchy like:
“The NCAA Are Pussies”
If they cave on this, let me suggest that their new name be the “Grovelling Political Correctoids.”
I’m kinda partial to “Insufferable NCAA Busybodies” as a replacement name.
Would the name The University of North Dakota Wimps be acceptable to the NCAA?
Bwahahahaha! I was thinking the same thing.
Or better yet, change it to the Fighting Sues and have a picture of a girl with pigtails - maybe like Pippi Longstocking.
Change the logo to a picture of Johnny Cash and call the team the “Fighting Sue”.
Even better!
That will look good on their uniforms.
They are also voting to do away with property taxes.

“Friends let me tell you ‘bout a North Dakotan named Ole
A poor grain farmer I can’t think of anything that rhymes with “Ole”
Then one day he was shootin’ at some food
And up from the ground come a bubblin’ crude
Oil that is
Black gold
North Dakota lutefisk.”
Utter nonsense and more waste of time and money. All problems in North Dakota must have been solved because why else would the voters be asked to decide on the totally trivial issue of the name of a sports team?
Am I to gather that you would be against the conduct of a national referendum barring the practice of political correctness?
