Today is the 25th anniversary of President Reagan's famous "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech before the Brandenburg Gate.
The speech was only controversial for a few days when it was given. It is only in retrospect, after the Berlin Wall came down, that all the world and now all of history can see its significance.
Only a few years before the speech the USA had been mired in stagflation and was reeling backwards after Vietnam and in the inept hands of Jimmy Carter. Cubans were across Africa and the Soviets had invaded
Afghanistan when Reagan took office, and the "Misery Index was spiraling up.
President Reagan, with the help of great friends inside his Administration and in Congress, and of course with the support of the American people, turned it all around.
I have been arguing for months now that 2012 is 1980 all over again, and that the country will send President Obama back to Chicago this fall just as it dispatched Jimmy Carter to Georgia --decisively-- and that the fresh start begun in January 2013 by Mitt Romney will quickly revitalize the country's fortunes.
There are even a lot of "Romney Democrats" starting to show up, as happened in Wisconsin where many union households voted for Scott Walker.

We can only hope with Mittens...with Reagan we had the real deal and did not know it according to the press..
Mr. Gob?
Who be dat? Be dis twitter?
Hewitt should bite his tongue for such a comparison. Wisconsin had NOTHING to do with moderate Mitt. For that matter Mittyboy attacked Santorum for openly appealing to union members in Michigan and would have attacked Reagan for the same.
Mitt had people going door to door making the same appeal. They showed up at my sister’s house in Livonia and told here that they didn’t care if she was liberal as long as she helped stop Santorum’s extreme agenda.
I’m surprised that 25 years ago we didn’t all drown, due to the collective pants-wetting by the media when Reagan said it. Remember, he was in Germany, telling the Soviets to tear down the wall. Oh, the humanity! He was suggesting that the Soviets somehow controlled the East German government! Gasp!
It was RINOs like Romney who tried to stop Reagan from saying it.
Romney was truly anti-Reagan and anti-Jesse Helms, he even left the party and didn’t vote for him, eventually giving to, supporting, and even fund raising and voting for, democrats.
The other night on Hannity’s show, Hewitt said that this is shaping up to be Carter vs. Reagan again. It was vomit inducing then, too, but I don’t imagine he’ll let it go anytime soon.
Hewitt LOOKS like the type that would be hot for Romney.
My neighbor (UAW) says that if he votes in the presidential slot at all it will be for Romney because Obama just plain sucks but he preferred Santorum in the primary.
Hewitt wants to update and re-hawk his book “A Mormon In The White House”.
Reagan just throws down the gauntlet... imagine Gorbachev, with his advisers, watching that speech. Not a good day for the Soviets.
Reagan’s speech reminds me how how tough, direct talk is desperately avoided by today’s leaders. To be truthful is to be “intolerant”.
Netanyahu is the only free world leader that speaks with the brave clarity of Reagan. Sad.
Mr Romney give up your liberal ways.
Mr. Gob Stopper...”Tear Down this wall!”
Reagan and romney should not even be in the same sentence. Reagan stood up and SPOKE against abortion and against other evils of the day. romney does not even recogize evil and he personally wrote evil into our laws:
Romney’s accomplishments.
1. Implemented/created Gay Marriage in MA
2. Supported and forced Gay Adoption in MA
3. Supported Abortion wholeheartedly
4. Raised taxes/fees over 300% while being Governor of MA
5. Implemented a state-level Cap and Trade system.
6. Supported Man-Made Global Warming
7. Supported the Brady Bill
8. Implemented a state level Assault Weapons Ban after the Federal AWB was allowed to expire.
9. Supported TARP
10. Supported Amnesty for Illegal Aliens (Citizenship for those already here)
11. Supported McCain-Kennedy (Amnesty)
12. Implemented a socialized medicine in MA called RomneyCare complete with an Individual Mandate and $50 abortions.
13. Nominated 27 Democrats (out of 36 nominations) for judgeships in MA, many of them extreme left-wingers
Isn’t this comparison disgusting? I resent the use of Reagan’s name being used to promote Mitt.
