Thanks Obamacare: 83% of Doctors Surveyed Say They May Quit
Townhall ^ | 06/15/2012 | Kate Hicks

The Doctor Patient Medical Association has released a new survey of about 700 doctors, and the results are bleak. Scary bleak. Among other dismal figures, Doctors' Attitudes on the Future of Medicine: What’s Wrong, Who’s to Blame, and What Will Fix It found that 83% of respondents are contemplating leaving the industry if Obamacare is fully implemented, owing to its disastrous projected consequences. Indeed, they openly blame the healthcare law for their industry's woes:

KEY FINDINGS

If this isn't an airtight argument for the repeal of Obamacare, nothing is. When the people providing the actual healthcare are thinking of getting out of the game, the system is clearly broken. Here's hoping the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare this month.

and “euthenists” as well.

Can’t have scarce resources being allocated to the “non-productive” now, can we?

Are you talking net or gross?
Even if it is net, not very much for the amount of work it takes to earn an MD.

I will open a quilt shop and my husband may go into computer work. We will not make the income we make now but will keep our integrity intact. You might want to think about that broad brush you are using. Most docs are intelligent motivated people who can do more than one thing.

“Let’s get with those who want to serve, not those who seek only to make a gob of money.”

Medical School costs upward of $150,000 and 6-8+ years to complete. I would say that the doctors are correct in desiring a high amount of money due to the opportunity costs (and monetary) of attending Med School.

What other incentive is there for the majority of people besides money? Yes some love the profession but the money is a prime motivating factor for spending all that time and money in school. You take away that incentive and you will have reduced Med School enrollment and lower quality doctors.

“Money’s fine, but medicine (long long ago) stopped being primarily about medicine, and started being about degrees.”

What other mechanism do we have to ensure that we have doctors who know what the heck they are doing? What mechanism would you suggest?

The doctor anesthetist are at approx $300-400k take home pay.

There are other options, but for the majority of Doc’s you are probably right.

I think we should allow a few more MD’s.

More competition.

Competition is good.

Agreed but how do we increase the supply of MD’s without reducing standards? It seems to be a catch-22 here.

My pediatrician SIL in Pittsburgh retired early. At the time her gross pay was $60k after malpractice insurance was deducted. I don’t know if this was before or after taxes. I didn’t ask. I was too shocked. She was an Ivy League grad.

While I make a good living I have only once reached 200k in the last few years. DH and I pay 6 figures in federal tax alone. We get no help with college etc. (not that I want it). To make that amount I work 14 hour days. I work nights weekends and holidays. It’s not the cakewalk you imagine. My income is being cut yearly. Some of my friends are down 40% in income over the past few years

Most of us have undergrad degrees in other areas (DH in chemical engineering). While I might not make as much doing something else, the change in lifestyle and decreased tax burden would be enticing. Plus there would not be the worry that everyone I see during the day could sue me and cause years of lawyers and misery. Don’t be so sure that Obamacare
Won’t be the straw that breaks the camels back. Most of us are looking for an exit strategy anyway

Staggering figures, and while I’m appreciative of everyone’s opinion re: doctor’s income, I would like to hear from doctors of all specialties just how O’care and government meddling will impact their ability to give excellent care to their patients. Mom MD?

Good for you but I bet you have a lot more money in your pension plan than the average American and you can go that route. What is your age btw??

The doctors who work for the hospital my GF works at are making $50-60K per year in their pension plan paid by the hospitals alone besides their take home pay.

No, I am not envious but many docs are making more in their pension plan put in by the hospitals that what the average Americans are earning income wise.

Again, many doctors I know are the worst bitch and moan complainers...everyone else has had to suck it up and pull in their belts..doctors should be no different.

I do med mal insurance. Some high-risk surgeons could pay for a nice house with their QUARTERLY premiums.

I have seen physicians come in the office with a law suit for something they had nothing to do with, it was a risk of that particular illness/surgery and weep from the stress of it all.

They play a very high risk game, give up many many years of their lives to get their education, many more years working long, thankless hours. I have great respect for these physicians. A huge majority really do care about their patients.

Yes, many have personality issues, but most are very competent and very dedicated. It is not an easy life.

Those reeducation camps are merely awaiting the stroke of the Dictator’s Pen. Everything is in place for the Administration to nationalize the entire healthcare industry and render the whole idea of independent physicians or treatment for the Cabal’s enemies a thing of the past.

DEA License to prescribe and dispense supersedes state licensing. ICD-10, names every condition and treatment all it requires is for the panel to cross-match it with the “permitted” diagnoses and treatments and fee schedule.

Hey .. I get it. I have an MBA in healthcare administration. But no doctors are starving. And it is hard work. Drs have to be on their toes 24/7. I appreciate the work you do. You’ve earned it!!
