Hundreds of evacuees in southern New Mexico on Wednesday stillweren't sure whether their homes were among the 224 destroyed by a wildfire near the town of Ruidoso.
Fire officials broke the news to evacuees Tuesday night, but emphasized that while crews had surveyed the destroyed properties they had no exact locations to share just yet.

The forest service takes such good care of its forests????? Compare western fires to southern forests...Fly over the N.M. ..Colorado..Wyoming forest most are 3/4’s dead... bark beetle...just waiting for a lighting strike..

Not only dead trees. The live ones have less moisture content than lumber at Home Depot.
I’m in one of the “moister” sections on NM, and my humidity is 15% right now.
Let me correct a couple of things you say. First it is not the forest service causing the problem, it is the environmentalists. They stop 95% of the management projects the forest service tries to do. And that includes both federal and state forestry departments. Second the forests are not 3/4 dead. It is only one of the tree species that is 3/4 dead from the bark beetle and that is the pinon tree. And this was a natural event derived from a drought which caused the bugs to overpopulate, much like a locust swarm in Africa. The tall pines, junipers, firs, spruce, etc., are all doing well other than being too crowded because the environmentalists refuse to allow anybody to thin the forest. They even sue private property owners who try to manage their own land. The environmentalists have killed more trees in the forests than the bark beetles, several hundred square miles every year are completely denuded because of the idiocy of the radical environmentalists.
The difference between Rocky Mountain forests and the northwest and the south is water. Our forests make due with 10 to 15 inches of moisture in a normal year. That is a real problem in years like this where the drought is massive (we are in our fourth year this time). Even the south has droughts but they still get a couple of feet of water in those years. Big difference. So our trees are dry and do burn very easily.
Having had to evacuate three times because of fires two years ago I do have some experience with the situation. It is pure HELL. I have a great deal of empathy with the folks in Ruidoso.

Bark Beetles Kill Millions of Acres of Trees in West (2008)
From New Mexico to British Columbia, the region’s signature pine forests are succumbing to a huge infestation of mountain pine beetles that are turning a blanket of green forest into a blanket of rust red. Montana has lost a million acres of trees to the beetles, and in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming the situation is worse.
“We’re seeing exponential growth of the infestation,” said Clint Kyhl, director of a Forest Service incident management team in Laramie, Wyo., that was set up to deal with the threat of fire from dead forests. Increased construction of homes in forest areas over the last 20 years makes the problem worse.
In Wyoming and Colorado in 2006 there were a million acres of dead trees. Last year it was 1.5 million. This year it is expected to total over two million. In the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, the problem is most severe. It is the largest known insect infestation in the history of North America, officials said. British Columbia has lost 33 million acres of lodgepole pine forest, and a freak wind event in 2006 blew mountain pine beetles, a species of bark beetle, over the Continental Divide to northern Alberta. Experts fear that the beetles could travel all the way to the Great Lakes.

Make your abode from concrete, clear all flammable brush away from burnable property items.

Done it (stucco), done it (except for one 400 year old Alligator Juniper in our courtyard), and definitely never have and never will (any Democrat unless they have no other competition).
What about the ponderosa pine? I thought that was hit hard too.
Even when the Forest Service can get around the environmentalist, they lack the resources to manicure the forest. It’s one thing to talk about thinning and clearing out dead and old wood, but it is quite another to get people to all the locations that need it. I’ve been all over the area burned by the Whitewater Baldy fire, and much of it is too rough and rocky, too remote to accomplish much with thinning crews, even if they could use chainsaws in the wilderness areas. It would take resources and cost money the Forest Service simply doesn’t have. Where I’m at now I’ve wondered why the Forest Service doesn’t take some heavy equipment and cut some roads into areas that are thick with dead pinon. It’s just fuel wood waiting for lightning. But even that would stress the financial resources of the Forest Service, not that the environmentalists would permit it. The policy of the environmentalists running the show is to close down every road they can, not to build new ones. When dealing with that kind of ignorance on a low budget, it’s a wonder the Forest Service is able to do what it does.
