One of the Gore-ain errors in his research is when the Soviet Union Collapsed they closed their outlier airfields in the colder regions which were used in temperature aggregates, so naturally thing got warmer.
BTW, Burt is pretty funny, homebuilders would only get this, one forum I attended, Burt started with "Welcome to the KR-2 forum"....
His presentation a few years ago at Oshkosh was replete with the facts and figures from his engineering study of the facts that were available to the time. This was before the East Anglia revelations.
You can find the powerpoint and pdf versions of his presentation at the following link. The powerpoint version has all of the notes he used for it. He did this only because he wanted to know for sure and decided on the presentation when everyone expected him to speak traditionally about aeronautics and the engineering dealing with it.

That he is eccentric is an understatement and right on mark is the point about taking his opinions to the bank. I know people who have worked directly with him.

Having flew a Q2 and then building one,, seeing Rutan’s name sure caught my eye. Now to read the article.
I was at Oshkosh when he debuted the Vari-eze prototype. That was back when it had a VW engine. He (with his brother flying) was trying to set some kind of record with the plane during the convention. The VW engine burned up partway through the record attempt.
I watched him and his brother change out the old engine and replace it with a donated one in one of the convention workshops. The crew all had “glass-backwards” T-shirts on. They were good — and fast. His brother went out the next day and set the record.
He certainly has gone on to bigger and better things since then.
P.S. The KR-1 and KR-2 are not Rutan designs. They were designed by Ken Rand a few years before the Vari-eze. Construction is somewhat similar, but not identical. The KR-1 and KR-2 were transitions from “wood and cloth” to “foam and fiberglass” construction using a little bit of both. The Vari-eze was “all-the-way” foam and fiberglass.
