19 APS educators may lose licenses over cheating

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission recommended Thursday that 19 Atlanta educators caught up in the nation's largest test cheating scandal be barred from the classroom.
The commission, which licenses and polices Georgia educators, voted to yank the certificates of the educators, who were implicated in a state cheating investigation report released last year. Ten educators in leadership positions had their certificates revoked; nine teachers had their certificates suspended for two years.
Thursday's action brings to 134 the number of Atlanta Public Schools employees sanctioned by the standards commission as a result of the investigation. Forty-eight cases have yet to be decided, including those of former Superintendent Beverly Hall and other top leaders who worked at APS.

If a scandal happens in Atlanta but nothing changes, did it make a noise?
Beverly Hall, and her “sister educator” Arlene Ackerman recently departed from the Philadelphia Schools Superintendency (after she took a bunch of money from San Francisco a year or so earlier ) should both be tried and put in jail! Black female “superintendents,” the highest paid migrant workers in the country! They are “equal opportunity” ripoff artists who have stolen millions from the school districts that hired them. Nothing “for the children,” it’s all going into their pockets!
It should NOT BE ABOUT THE EDUCATORS. The PRINCIPALS are responsible. No state testing protocols are changed without the principals purposefully issuing instruction, USUALLY FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT. Why should the teachers be punished for the sins of the supervisors?
Are you saying they shouldn't be punished because their boss told them to do it?
What other professions should get a pass and not lose their license if their boss tells them to falsify test data? Plumbers, electricians, nurses?

The system of comprehensive testing works that way. The principal gathers all the teachers together April/May and explains how the tests will be administered in lieu of the state’s requirements. The teachers respond to the administrator’s own directives. The problem with your premise is that you are talking about employees feigning their own results; I’m talking about school districts gaming the NCLB system.
We’re talking about the teachers, under the direction of administration, conducting “erase and correct” parties that cover the immense reading and writing problems that many urban school districts have just so the administration can have a “We did it!” party and receive plaudits from everyone.
The children, however, will still be in a remedial state because the administration cheated itself into an elevated one.

I think the administration should be punished first and then the teachers by the amount that they gave in to the administration. A lot of these urban teachers are 1-3 years exp. that know that the administration can spend a week observing them and find 3-100 violations of “standards” which they can force the teacher to resign for.
For example, I used to teach in Jackson, Mississippi. We had a superintendent that, through text messages, tried to seduce another male MARRIED principal. The district spend almost a MILLION in legal costs to defend him. Then, they had a bond issue in which 1/3 of a $150 million bond issue that was supposed to fix every school in the district DISAPPEARED. We teachers wondered where it went, while knowing where it went.
Basically, urban school districts suck. The $$ goes to admin and not teachers, and then the teachers are blamed for all the crap the admin caused. The term “three and flee” comes to mind, all a future admin has to do is “teach” three years (while a good teacher takes at least 7-10 to develop) and have a masters in education and BOOM - part of the system.
It’s sad to say this, but I’ve seen a “three and flee” admin bug the hell out of a 35 year veteran teacher until he left. We’re talking about an old white guy that had a 100% black class silent for 90 minutes every class, every day, leave because an admin was writing crap about him on his performance reviews and sitting in his class daily and then calling him into district because of his “bad methodology”

Here in NJ urban teachers make a ton of money (”combat pay”), while getting less results than their suburban & rural counterparts. While they have many excuses (some of which are valid), then I think we take them off the teachers’ union gravy train and pay them as day-care workers. There is no reason to squander that money on unteachable kids (and it is squandered).

Have they been suspended with pay all this time?
