MK slams plan to name center after Israel's only astronaut, calls move offensive to Arabs as Ramon had previously been IAF pilot.
MK Ahmed Tibi (UAL) on Tuesday condemned plans to name a new space center in Taybeh after Israel's first and only astronaut, the late Ilan Ramon.
Speaking to Army Radio, Tibi stated that Ramon served in the IAF as a fighter pilot, which could offend the Arab community. Tibi also asserted that during his military service, Ramon participated in the attack on Iraq's nuclear reactor.
"Upon receiving my invitation to the space center's opening ceremony, I was very surprised to see that it was being named after Ilan Ramon," Tibi said. "Although I admit the circumstances of his death were tragic, I don't think it is appropriate to name a space station in an Arab village after him." Tibi added that he thought the decision was "distasteful" and "unjustified."
Ramon was killed in the Columbia space shuttle crash along with six other crew members.
Responding to Tibi's comments, Science and Technology Minister Daniel Hershkovitz (Habayit Hayehudi) said the center will be named "after an Israeli hero who was instrumental in fighting Islamic terrorism both inside Israel's borders and outside." Hershkovitz added: "I do not accept these ridiculous and provocative assertions (by Tibi) that the name would be acceptable in Ra'anana (a predominantly Jewish city) but not in Taybeh."
Gadi Ramon, brother of the fallen Israeli astronaut, challenged Tibi to decide whether or not he wants to be a member of the state of Israel. Gadi added that he does not view being an Arab and being a Zionist as mutually exclusive. "I work with many people from the Arab sector and they treated my brother with respect and admiration," Army Radio quoted him as saying.

I agree. I think they ought to put his name up in very bright lights that flash during prayer call. Maybe fireworks, too. They're going to be pissed, no matter what anyone does. Might as well do it right.
If you want to know you are on the right path just see if it offends arabs (to be more exact MUD-SLIMES) as there are some Christian Arabs.

Ilan Ramon, flew in the critical "Tail End Charlie" spot in the attack. He was the last in to the target (When all the bad guys are awake and pissed), placed his ordnance directly into the ruptured containment building.(a bullseye!), conducted the BDA (Bomb Damage Assessment)of the mission, and protected the exiting squadron exposed "6". A position in which the pilot must have his head on a swivel and be prepared to take on opposing fighters in a out numbered situation. He was a fighter pilots Fighter pilot! RIP
