(Reuters) - A former Rutgers University student convicted of bias crimes for using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate's sexual encounter was released from a New Jersey jail on Tuesday after serving 20 days of his 30-day sentence.
Dharun Ravi, 20, looking unshaven, left the Middlesex County jail shortly after 8:30 a.m. EDT (1230 GMT) accompanied by his attorney. They left from a side exit and avoided a throng of media that was awaiting his release.
Ravi received a 10-day credit for good behavior, allowing him to leave after serving 20 days of his 30-day sentence imposed by Judge Glenn Berman.

Whether it was a live stream or a video upload, he distributed it, that’s a fact. That’s not the act of someone simply trying to watch their property.
He was convicted of invasion of privacy and a "bias crime" - so, both spying and spying on a homo encounter were the issues. I believe the judge actually sentenced him separately for each count, and the jail sentence was for obstruction of justice (he deleted a bunch of twitter posts/other computer files) - he got probabtion for both the invasion of privacy and "bias crime" charges.

It is not at all uncommon for a college student to kick their roommate out of a shared dorm room to invite relative strangers in to commit all sorts of sexual acts. Straight, gay, whatever - doesn't give the roommate reason to spy (and invite others to do so).
Ravi claimed he left the camera on because he was concerned for his personal property. He was attempting to accommodate his roommate while protecting his personal property. He was persecuted not prosecuted.
If it was really out of concern for his personal property, why tweet about it and invite others to watch?
What crime? Having to endure his roommate having gay sex in a tiny little dorm room that he was paying for as part of his education? If his gay roommate was comfortable in his homosexual skin he wouldn’t have committed suicide.

What other recourse does he have. I'd have been revengeful too had I been treated that way. The universities refuse to enforce their rules, and some kids take it upon themselves to penalize. Should we be shocked?
