A report of shots fired in the Bay neighborhood early Monday afternoon led to the arrest of three city men and the seizure of a handgun that had been reported stolen in Amherst over three years ago.

All three suspects were ordered held in lieu of $25,000 cash bail following their arraignments in District Court.

Police, alerted by the city’s ShotSpotter audio surveillance system and 911 callers, responded to the area of Girard and Hayden avenues shortly after 1:15 p.m., according to a release issued by Commissioner William J. Fitchet’s office.

An anonymous tipster told police that a black SUV fled the scene and was able to provide a partial plate number on the vehicle and a description of a suspect.

Detectives recovered 9 mm shell casings at the scene.

About 15 minutes later, Officer Ryan Carter noticed a black SUV with the reported partial plate number driving near Roosevelt Avenue and Wilbraham Road. Carter followed the SUV and stopped it at 32 Fenwick St.

The front seat passenger, who matched the description given at the scene, fled on foot. He was later identified as Michael Gibbs, 25, of 123 Fenwick St.

The driver and a second passenger remained in the vehicle and were held at bay by Carter until additional officers arrived at the scene to assist. They were identified as Kevin Scruse, 25, of 82 Mapledell St., and Derrick Nembhard, 27, of 123 Fenwick St.

A black Smith&Wesson handgun was recovered from the front seat of the vehicle. Police were then tipped off that Gibbs had entered the home at 123 Fenwick. Police found Gibbs in the basement and he was arrested without incident.

All three were charged with carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card and receiving stolen property over $250.

It is interesting that the reporter can describe the color of the weapon - Black Smith&Wesson handgun - but not the perps!

Pic of perps not required, they were not reported as white males and one given name, gave race away.

The thing I wonder about in this story is the “shotspotter” - how many locales have these, and do local citizens know of their existence beforehand?
Kind of like I wonder when the news shows us a pic of a carjacker going through a McD’s parking lot...
