Rep. Darrell Issa said Wednesday that he is pressing ahead with a committee vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, despite an 11th-hour move by President Obama to exert executive privilege over the Fast and Furious documents at the heart of the dispute.
The announcement immediately touched off a caustic debate on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, as Democrats accused Issa of prosecuting a "political witch hunt" and Republicans stepped up their criticism of Holder's "stonewalling" over the Fast and Furious probe. Even for Washington, the tone at the hearing was decidedly bitter and accusatory.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee was first informed of the president's decision to exert executive privilege in a letter Wednesday morning, shortly before the contempt vote was scheduled.
Issa said committee staff are evaluating the letter but described the move as too little, too late as he and other GOP lawmakers questioned the basis for the assertion.
"This untimely assertion by the Justice Department falls short of any reason to delay today's proceedings," Issa said.
Issa accused the Justice Department of trying to compel the committee to close its investigation in exchange for documents it hasn't yet seen. "I can't accept that deal. No other committee chairman would," he said.
But Issa's Democratic counterpart, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., fired back that Holder never made such a demand -- a Justice official also refuted Issa's claim -- and said the attorney general had come to the committee in "good faith" to try and work out an agreement.

Political Witch Hunt my ass.
Executive Privilege is an admission by Obama that he is in this up to his big floppy ears.
They aren’t hunting a witch, the Warlock just jumped out of hiding.
Makes Watergate look like a picnic.
Yes, following this.
Question, though: One of Fox’s “experts” claimed that there was no proof that a walked, Fast & Furious gun killed a Terry. No argument ensued. Am I missing something?
Sorry, delete that “a” before Terry.
Which is why the story of a missing 3rd gun at the scene of the Terry shooting is very significant.
I am listening to another lying dumbass (e.g. Democrat Politician) and he, like the rest, keep referring to GUN CONTROL. They make their intents obvious.
Connelly, it was, and he said the officials in Mexico were concerned about the number of guns coming into Mexico from the US.
Then why is the government aiding the trafficking of guns INTO Mexico? Why are he and the other dumbasses covering up for it?
We know why.
More LYNCH: "blah, blah, blah, everone's so mean and after Holder. It's George Bush's fault, blah, blah, blah. And that proves Holder is innocent."
Same speech, from all the Dems.
I know the pings are piling up, but there are great comments on all the threads. And besides that, I am hyper to the max over this!
here is the reasoning in a nutshell...
fubo, holder, clintoon and napolitano spoke of the “river of iron” flowing from north to south..
upon investigation, it was found this river did not exist...
soooo... one needed to be created...
This was the beginning
“...And besides that, I am hyper to the max over this!...”
You’re not alone on this. Having duct-tape head wrap moments myself right now over it.
Everything happens for a reason. Have faith. We will win this, one way or another.
Now I wonder if the number of Dem Reps who supposedly would vote for Contempt will change...up or down? Will they circle the wagons or feel alarmed. I do think they must have seen something in the past couple of weeks to have 31 of them supposedly support it.
Quigley (D umbass) states, “you can buy as many AK47’s as you want.”
Apparently he doesn’t know the law. And apparently, all guns are AK47’s. (AK47 is a ‘keyword’ for Dems)
Obfuscation, lies, and plenty of stuttering by the DEMS. Direct quick short responses by the Repubs.
STUTTER and RAMBLE. LIAR.
Direct , to the point, brief. TRUTH.
IIRC, melson got himself a att’y, testified behind closed doors almost a year ago.
Obama screwed up again. Jarret should have fired Holder and announced it was for incompetence. Then Obama could have stayed out of the fray and avoided being dragged into this.....
Unless Obama was involved and the evidence that the judiciary committee is seeking would implicate the his involvement in the cover-up.
Here is what I believe happened.
1) Holder knew of the program and the president was briefed.
2) As a result of Holder's testimony (perjury) they had to cover up the involvement of Holder and awareness of Obama.
3) The documents that are being sought will show that Holder Perjured himself and that Obama/Jarret ordered him to do so to avoid having to implicate the President's approval or knowledge of what was going on. The documents will show a scandal.
This would explain why Obama can't let Holder go and now must claim executive privilege to cover his own a$$.
But this hearing is not about the fact they did it.
It is about the fact that they continue to lie about doing it, and condemn these ‘hearings’ based on -the Republicans are ‘meanies’ for demanding the TRUTH.
DesJarlais (R eal): “The Obama Administration is concerned about the ‘evolving truth’. And that term bothers me.”
Obama himself is an ‘evolving truth’.
Welch (D umbass): “Every time we DEMS try to bend the Republicans and the Public over a table and screw them in the rear, they get mad and want investigations. This keeps us from getting anything done.”
(Just kidding. But that was the implication of his comments)
I am fully aware of that... I started following this back in January 2011, right after Terry was murdered....
Issa has played this exactly right, he started his investigation, began to close the back doors and escape routes....
It would appear he as been successful....
Supreme court hearing in 3....2...1...
and if presidence means anything in a court of law, revocation of said executive priviledge...
Then, just like nixon, we will get a wave from a helicopter..
Issa: “We lowered the goalposts to the ground, but Holder keeps trying to bury the football somewhere out on the 50 yard line.”
(again, kidding, but that is what he implied. And he’s right.)
