Boycotting Obama’s convention: Some Democrats are refusing to go to the party's convention...
Salon ^ | June 20, 2012 | Steve Kornacki

Posted on 06/20/2012 11:47:20 AM PDT by Colofornian

Yesterday, the news was that three of the biggest name Democrats in West Virginia – Senator Joe Manchin, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, and Rep. Nick Rahall – will be skipping the party’s national convention this summer. Today, it’s that Pennsylvania Rep. Mark Critz isn’t going either. Don’t be surprised to read more stories like these over the next few months.

To the president’s foes on the right, it makes for a useful cudgel: Obama is so unpopular and so politically poisonous are terrified of being anywhere near convention that re-nominates him! The reality, though, is much less dramatic.

Critz and the West Virginia trio are all from a wide swath of rural America – “Greater Appalachia,” stretching from parts of Oklahoma and Texas all the way to southwestern Pennsylvania – where lower-income white voters hold Obama in unusually low regard.

This isn’t really a new phenomenon. Obama struggled mightily in the region during the 2008 Democratic primaries, suffering lopsided losses to Hillary Clinton even after it was clear he’d be the nominee. In West Virginia, for instance, he lost to Clinton by 41 points, and in the 2008 general election, Greater Appalachia was about the only place in America where Obama performed worse than John Kerry had in 2004.

And since the ’08 election, Obama’s popularity has gone down everywhere...the backlash has been more pronounced among the blue collar, non-college-educated whites who disproportionately populate Greater Appalachia...

Add it all up and it’s enough to make Obama’s standing in Greater Appalachia, never strong to begin with, truly, truly awful – so bad that he lost to fringe candidates and uncommitted slates in scores of counties across the region during this year’s primary season.

I don't blame them. Who wants to go to Charlotte anyway?

It’s a nice place. Too bad they’re going to let such a crew of criminals pollute it. Maybe this will be the teaching moment they’ve been needing since they allowed BofA to dominate the landscape there.

In a related note, the author opines that these defections and declinations are all ‘cause them Reps & such are such crackers, You know, knuckledraggers. You see ‘em from Texas to Pennsylvania in that swath called Greater Appalachia.

Bet this drives ‘em back to the fold in droves.

Must be racism. Can’t think of any other reason people wouldn’t want four more years of this guy.

Actually, I lived there for a while and loved it. I was taking a dig at my cousin who's out there lurking, I know.
They're going to see some bums who easily outdo anything we rednecks can come up with.

Salon none-too-subtly calls a few million residents of 'Appalachia' ignorant racists for not supporting the liberal emperor-wannabe, Barack Hussein Obama. And the left wonders why it is rapidly losing it's longtime grip on the body politic.

Simple answer, lefties: a combination of Obama's unmitigated arrogance and the insistence of the political left to characterize any opposition to his socialist policies and Marxist ideology as 'racist'. Non-black voters are weary of being called racists simply because Obama has failed, miserably and they want to hold him accountable for those failures, just as they would any other president. Jimmy Carter being a primary example. Frankly, if everyone is a 'racist' (who questions/opposes Obama) then no one is.

Yeah, no slant there, eh, Kornacki?

I really wish the cars of these little metrosexual leftie reporters would break down in Appalachian country on a Saturday night...

No problem there will be a stand by crowd to make sure it looks like Obama still has so many admirers..

Kornacki is gay and lives in Manhattan.
I’d say it’s unlikely he’s metrosexual or owns a car, LOL.
