WASHINGTON -- Television cameras will surround the Supreme Court on Thursday morning, as they did Monday, anticipating something that may, again, not happen.
The momentous healthcare decision could be announced Thursday. Or not. All we really know is that it is extremely likely to be handed down by the following Thursday, June 28, when the court is expected to end its current term.
The court works in secrecy as it prepares its opinions, and outsiders might be surprised to learn that some of its work is done at the last minute. The justices would have voted almost immediately after three days of oral arguments last March on whether President Obamas healthcare overhaul is constitutional. Although that vote would normally have determined the outcome of the case, there is a lot of back and forth before the majority opinion and the dissents, if any, are finished.
Last Friday was the deadline for justices to hand in dissents. Then whoever is writing the majority opinion the betting is on Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. has the option of responding to any criticism of the ruling in his own opinion.
The decisions are printed inside the ornate 1935 Corinthian-style building, and handed out to reporters as the justice who authored the opinion announces the decision from the bench shortly after 10 a.m. By tradition the senior justice goes last, so healthcare is likely to be the last decision announced on the day it comes down.
Only a few times in modern history have the results leaked ahead of time, once reputedly from a comment by a justice to a reporter, another time from a talkative printer.
The court is not meeting Friday, so if the healthcare decision does not come Thursday, the next opportunity would be Monday.

Obummer’s bad week is turning into Obummer’s bad month.
Happy “ Anthony Kennedy is a coward” day.
So what’s the word on the street???
cautiously optimistic.
It may “legally” stand, but then the beast can also be starved...
A Senate win is imperative.
I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s 5-4 to uphold. I do not trust Kennedy and will probably be more shocked if SCOTUS struck it down. These times we live in do not inspire confidence or optimism in regard to anything court/law related.
I will be praying because this country will take a drastic turn for the worse if this doesn’t go our way.
I say the S.C. ruling determines the next President.
Hope this continues to be a bad month for the communist!
Let me write some headlines for the Los Angeles Times for the next few days:
Supreme Court may reveal healthcare verdict Friday
Supreme Court may reveal healthcare verdict Monday
Supreme Court may reveal healthcare verdict Tuesday
and here’s some more they are good at. Just fill in the blanks.
___________ may lead to __________.
___________ can lead to __________.
They don’t print news anymore, just prognostication and opinion.
Tomorrow just happens to be Constitution Day. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
“Live Free or Die.”
You just know the libs offered Kennedy the opportunity to write the opinion if he would join them. I think he has been more steadfast since O’Connor left. She was the devil standing on his shoulder and talking him into being liberal. But I still don’t trust him. He fears bad press more than bad decisions.
I hope they announce it tomorrow. I’ve been on pins and needles, and I don’t know if I can stand waiting until next Thursday. What’s the holdup with announcing it? I can’t stand the drama!
Me, too.
Fingers crossed that they will not only strike the mandate but they will uphold the severability clause, throwing the entire heap of poo out the window.
LOL!
Justice Skeletor wouldn’t be yapping about how sharply divided the Court was if they had voted to uphold. Then she would be saying that they were “united”. Haven’t said that, it doesn’t much matter because the repubicrats are already planning obabacare lite if it does gets struck down.
“Tomorrow just happens to be Constitution Day. I dont think thats a coincidence.”
Constitution Day tomorrow?
Constitution Day is September 17th.
If the vote is to uphold, Nina Totenberg will describe the decision as “closely decided.” If the vote is to overturn, Nina Totenberg will describe it as “bitterly divided.”
A Senate win won’t matter if conservatives refuse to vote for Romney, giving Obama another term.
Obama will never overturn his own socialized medicine law.
We need the Senate AND Romney, otherwise Obamacare is here to stay.
The House and Senate cannot overturn Obamacare without Romney’s signature on it, unless the majority is veto proof.
If Obama wins a 2nd term, it doesn’t matter what the House and Senate do.
Is that true? I agree then, not a coincidence. I am more interested in the Arizona case than the health care.
You are correct. Officially Constitution Day is Sept. 17th. But the final state necessary to ratify was New Hampshire which did it on June 21, 1788.
My calendar says September 17th is “Citizenship Day.”
I suspect the delay is due to the losers on the decision (the Liberals) insisting upon daily re-writes of their dissents as they get more orders from Obama.
“You are correct.”
You are correct. It was on this date 224 years ago today. The state of New Hampshire ratified and was the needed 9th state to make the Constitution official.
Sorry to question your facts!
