JS is still going to get his, but I think this is the start of the post-trial civil suit gravy train.

I may have overstated with the word "prisoner", when what I should have said more precisely is that, as a battered woman herself, she was a prisoner to her mortal fear at the point when her partner's adopted daughter was beaten for what then turned out to be the final time. Her case did spark a necessary discussion about the role of the non-abusing parent who acquiesces to abuse even if they are not committing it themselves.
It's well to remember that services for battered women may not have been as well developed or available at that time; what she did was leave the apartment after an egregious beating of the child and did not call for help (ostensibly fearing another beating for herself), but the child then died the next morning.
