Great Recession took deep toll across U.S. states

The nation's recent recession had a "broad and deep" impact across the United States, but certain states such as Florida and California were particularly hard-hit, according to a report released on Thursday.

The study, led by Yale University political science professor Jacob Hacker, found that while the U.S. Northeast was largely spared from the economic fallout in the years after the Great Recession, the U.S. South and West were hit harder.

Researchers said their study is the first state-by-state look at the how the downturn affected economic security and household incomes. It was paid for by the Rockefeller Foundation, a global nonprofit organization focused on relieving economic inequality.

States in the Midwest, a large industrial hub, saw a slower economic erosion from 2008 to 2010, the findings showed. The recession officially ran from late 2007 to mid-2009.

"No part of the nation was spared. Nonetheless, some states were hit particularly hard," the report said.

Hacker's team ranked the recession's impact on states by developing a measurement tool based on government economic data, called the Economic Security Index.

The index represents the percentage of the population who experienced a substantial financial loss from one year to the next. Specifically, it shows the share of Americans who experienced a financial loss of 25 percent or greater due to either a decline in income, an increase in medical spending or both.

States with the worst economic losses from 2008 to 2010 were Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and California. Among the states with the least impact were Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine....

“....found that while the U.S. Northeast was largely spared from the economic fallout in the years ***after*** the Great Recession, the....”

Besides the ridiculous “after” as though it is a past event, the fact is that I assure you that NY and NJ (”northeast” as far as I’m concerned) are faring very poorly in this Depression. Many of the jobs we lost either went to southern states or to southern Asia; they will not return if there is a recovery. The infrastructure is crumbling further because there is no money to fix anything; potholes go unfilled, stop signs are obscured by foliage (public works employees had weaker bargaining power than teachers and cops, so they went first), companies continue to leave...

One silver lining to this is that it puts ALL of these states in play; Obama is going to have to campaign in states that should have been a shoe-in.

As if the statement “after the Recession” isn’t suspect enough, he goes on to state that “States in the NE were largely spared...Florida hard hit.”

Really? I guess that $75,000 my house in SE Pa. lost in value didn’t show up...

You are absolutely right. Tens of thousands of regular every day (non fat cat) workers lost their jobs in the banking and Wall Street industry. Jobs that aren’t coming back ever. Home values in NJ have plummeted. Obama’s agenda is to deliberately destroy the net worth of hard working American families. I despise the evil SOB

What a POS he is. What goes around eventually comes around. I haven’t given up on divine intervention.

“Some members of the authorized, licensed, political public are paid directly with government debt/revenues.”

Got to agree with you 100%. All the liberal scum aren’t just relying on foodstamps and section 8 payouts from sugar daddy government. I briefly worked with one leftist scumball who ran an engineering firm. He was the No. 1 cheerleader for more regulations from the fascist EPA.

He positioned his firm as the primary interpreter of EPA regulations. For a hefty price, he would explain to businesses how they could comply to regulations without getting into trouble with the fascists at EPA. He supported all manner of private property confiscation by EPA and the ESA.

The 43% number is not versus Romney, but an approval number, which is completely different.

Forgive my last post... I was confused. I got two polls mixed up, which both have Obama at 43%. I didn't realize he was at 43% vs Romney, but he is ( http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/general_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html )

Rasmussen Tracking 6/18 - 6/20 1500 LV 3.0 43 47 Romney +4.

Great recession?

More like depression 2.0

Media will never use that word until the day Romney takes office.

After aborting 50,000,000 Americans, I tend to think Obama is Divine intervention along the lines of punishment.

I would wish you were wrong but I think you are right. For God’s punishment, I wish that those who voted for him would gag on him!
