If the Turks retaliate the Syrians are toast, fighting is sport to the Turks.

Turkey is a member of NATO.
The NATO charter says and attack on one is an attack on all.
Obama will join Turkey in whacking Syria in October.

Wasn’t the plane in Syria’s airspace?

I don't think anyone is saying positively yet. I read al Jezeera to see what their view was and more confused than ever!

One thing I did read over there...supposedly the FSA seized several anti-aircraft missiles from an air force base near Damascus. Many Syrian regulars defected as well. What if the FSA, currently involved in combat near Latakia (sight of shoot down) mistook the Turkish F-4 for a Syrian aircraft and brought it down?

Fingers pointing in all directions. Methinks the brothers Assad better have their personal jet fueled, with pilot on 5 minute stand-by...

With the breakdown of talks between Pakistan and the US over military supplies to Afghanistan, Russia has near total control over what can be shipped to the US troops in Afghanistan. That fact will enter into the calculus of what to do in Syria.

I’m totally confused as well. I thought I read earlier it was in Syrian airspace.

The 5 minute standby is a good idea.

The whole M.E. is not looking good. (not that it ever does)

Its not nice to shoot down Turkeys airplanes. They take a dim view of such things.

“Methinks the brothers Assad better have their personal jet fueled, with pilot on 5 minute stand-by...”

My money’s on the Assad’s and here’s why.

Khofi Annan is the UN clown in charge of the mission. When he’s involved it never turns out well. He will fail miserably just like he did in Rwanda.

Egypt is getting ready to break out again. When it does, Syria becomes a sideshow.

And as a previous poster noted, the Russian’s are controlling our supply routes to Afghanistan. Will we jeopardize them in order to put an unknown entity in Syria into power?

But then again, who knows what the little prince in the White Hut will decree.

I don’t think Syria wants any part of Turkey.

I do not disagree with a thing you say. I was merely ruminating. Putting things "out there." There are so many "whatifs" re:Syria. Many, many factions. Many, many diverse interests. One never knows how these things will shake out.

I do not think Russia will give up its base at Tartus. Not easily. And yet they will not fight for another muslim country I don't think.

And yet, I've watched videos on al Gezeera showing what appear to be, G-3 (CETME) almost NIB being carried by FSA. Must be coming from Turkey? And we pretty much know Turkey is training and "re-grouping" former Assad military people.

All of Assad's equipment will do him little good if he doesn't have the man power to operate it. And he doesn't have Mali Mercs like Qadaffi did.

I just do not want to see any US/Allied troops fighting in another Third World lash-up.

“I just do not want to see any US/Allied troops fighting in another Third World lash-up.”

At least I know now that there is at least two of us who feel that way.

They will make short work of them if the Russkies don’t jump in. The Turks were the only people who could keep Arab Muslims in line..

Meanwhile, U.N. Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan told reporters in Geneva Friday that “countries of influence” need to persuade both sides in Syria to “stop the killing and start the talking.”

Besides Keith Olbermann - is there anybody more irrelavant than Kofi Annan?

Depending on how Turkey reacts this could give the Turkish F-16 pilots a chance to get some kills courtesy of the Syrian AF.
