Euro crisis: (German FinMin) Schäuble predicts imminent referendum on Europe
Der Spiegel (Google translation) ^ | 06/23/2012

Wolfgang Schäuble calls for more political clout in Brussels. The European Commission should develop into a true government, says the Finance Minister in a Spiegel interview. He expected that the Germans must therefore vote on a new constitution. …

"The Europe of the future, not a federal state, will be modeled after the U.S. and Germany. It will have its own structure. This is a very exciting experiment," said Schäuble.

The Minister of Finance warned forcefully not to place the common currency at risk: "There is a real danger that in a breakup of the euro, as I believe (won't happen), incidentally, much of what we have achieved and (grown) fond of would be questioned—from the internal market to the freedom to travel in Europe. But a breakup of the EU would be absurd. The world is moving ever closer together, and in Europe, each country would again go its own way? This cannot and will not be! " …

Given the history of Europe I don't see Germans voting in favor of being ruled from Brussels.

They certainly won’t. Something like what happened in 2009 will happen, where powers actually get transferred from Brussels to Berlin (meaning so-called “supranational” powers).

So, in the midst of an economic crisis, with everybody in a panic, this guy wants to cobble together a European national state, ruled by the very same bureaucrats that brought the Euro to the brink of ruin.

Boy, there’s a great idea. NOT!!!!!

He won the "prestigious" Charlemagne Prize. I gather he's Lagarde's pet.

great idea or not, the only way failing organizations can keep the music playing is to absorb other balance sheets. the more books there are to cook, the more stew you get.

and when that superstate teeters, they'll cobble together some more.

I betcha that the first "amendment" to the German constitution is repeal of the ban on anschluss.

France gets eliminated from the Euro (score 2-0) and all of a sudden there is a crisis?

Actually, rather than Berlin, I think the EU capital should be moved to Linz.

It's only fitting...

I don't see a lot of nations willing to erase their identities in the name of a shapeless rootless bureaucracy. If the EU forms a "true government" it will just be a fascist hellhole and blow apart before long.
