East Coast seas on the rise

From Cape Hatteras, N.C., to just north of Boston, sea levels are rising much faster than they are around the globe, putting one of the world's most costly coasts in danger of flooding, government researchers report.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists call the 600-mile swath a "hot spot" for climbing sea levels caused by global warming. Along the region, the Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times to four times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

It's not just a faster rate, but at a faster pace, like a car on a highway "jamming on the accelerator," said the study's lead author, Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the agency. He looked at sea levels starting in 1950, and noticed a change beginning in 1990.

Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches. But in Norfolk, Va., where officials are scrambling to fight more frequent flooding, sea level has jumped a total of 4.8 inches, the research showed. For Philadelphia, levels went up 3.7 inches, and in New York City, it was 2.8 inches.

Climate change pushes up sea levels by melting ice sheets in Greenland and west Antarctica, and because warmer water expands.

Any study showing sea level rising faster in some areas than others proves it is not the sea level rising, but land sinking.

You are 100% correct. This is pure Bravo Sierra and a blatant lie. It is a function of plate tectonics and the spreading sea floor of the Atlantic. The best that can be said for the author is he is totally ignorant of Geology are a liar. I suspect both. Click on he link for a Geologic Explanation Atlantic Margin Structure.

"The water level in the creek behind my house is down. I’m predicting it’ll be up next March and down again next July."

The ankle deep water is widening in the creek in front of my house. Land is shrinking. In 10 years the creek bed will be under my house.

A physical impossibility. Land could be subsiding, making it appear so, but water seeks its own level. Wind can temporarily “pile it up” against land, but it always goes back.

These lying morons think that evryone is just plain stupid, and in many cases they are right!

Bring it! At 1100 feet above sea level I’m ready for beach front property!

I’ve worked here on the USCG Academy since June 1988. The exact same knot on a pier pilon that only gets half covered at full moon high tide, still doesn’t get covered. The knot in the wood is 2 inches in diameter. My favorite fishing spot for stripers (and other fish) during lunch hour.

If Assachussets is flooded, is that a bad thing? Even better, Marthas Vineyard?

We can only hope that that Mordor-on-the-Potomac would be swallowed by the Atlantic.

Shoreline retreat may actually be the effect of the East Coast regions SINKING, as the plates that support that part of the East Coast pulls further and farther away from its neighbors.

But so far, there is no constituency for that theory, and no easily applicable reason to raise taxes to accomplish an altogether amorphous objective, as in the instance of global warming, and subsequent melting of the Arctic ice sheets on Greenland.

I tried to educate myself but this article only helps to explain that it is really hard to measure sea level. Bottom line, you must have a fixed reference to compare to the thing measured. In this case a little gauge is fixed onto something that is assumed to be unchanging and it is read over long periods of time.

Sounds like the so called weather stations used to measure temperatures.

I can’t believe they are still trying to sell this sack of shhhhhaving cream. Imagine if these obnoxious, unrelenting slobs with no sense of shame got into the business world. They could be trillionaires in a year or two. But no, instead they infect the universities and beg for research grants funded by tax money.

New York City, it was 2.8 inches.

Weren't they saying it would be ten or fifteen feet higher by now and the Henry Hudson would be underwater?

“change beginning in 1990. Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches.”

There aren’t devices that can measure such a small change. What is the point of reference?
