Government wants more people on food stamps
CNN ^ | June 25, 2012: | Tami Luhby

More than one in seven Americans are on food stamps, but the federal government wants even more people to sign up for the safety net program. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been running radio ads for the past four months encouraging those eligible to enroll.

The campaign is targeted at the elderly, working poor, the unemployed and Hispanics.

The department is spending between $2.5 million and $3 million on paid spots, and free public service announcements are also airing. The campaign can be heard in California, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, and the New York metro area.

"Research has shown that many people -- particularly underserved seniors, working poor, and legal immigrants -- do not understand the requirements of the program," said Kevin Concannon, a USDA under secretary.

The radio ads, which run through June 30, come amid a bitter partisan fight over the safety net program. Republican lawmakers want to reduce funding for the benefit or turn it into a block grant program, which would also minimize the cost. Democrats, however, are not willing to make major cuts

The easiest way to buy votes is to use other people’s money.

Definition of Irony!

The Food Stamp program, part of the Department of Agriculture, announced that it is pleased to be distributing food stamps to the greatest number of people ever.

Meanwhile, the Park Service, also part of the Department of Agriculture, asks us to “Please do not feed the animals” because they may grow dependent and not learn to take care of themselves.

That 2/5 or 3 million Smackeoos would feed a lot of people for a long time.

I’m betting that there aren’t many “needy” people in this country who can’t figre out where to go for their food stamps and other gummit programs in some Robin Hood scheme or another.

“Government wants” is classic “reification”...

It’s not “government”, it’s the socialist leftists that are IN government that “want”.

In addition to buying votes for Dims - from those on food stamps - grocery merchants from big so small are benefiting (compliments of the taxpayer), as well.

I’d not shop anywhere they have the “we accept EBT/Food stamps”.

My own form of protest. Are there any such stores in existence?

Once the govt gets in businesses like this without constitutional authority, then anything goes. I can envision details to make non-EBT stores non-existent. For example, and I don’t know if true or not, but I’d be surprised if it were not the case:

1. Govt reimburses the grocer for the product price, regardless of sales
2. Govt reimburses the grocer for the product list price,
3. Govt reimburses the grocer for 2x (or any factor) the price - after all, this is wealth transfer...2x, 3x, 10x is all the better agenda-wise.

It’s a vicious circle, there are so many folks on EBT I don’t think any food business could afford NOT to take it, except maybe a very high end specialty shop.

The govt has those commercials here in Indiana (along with the Obama phone commercials) but this would be far more effective:

I don't know if you heard the morning show on KLBJ a couple of weeks ago, but the Austin silly council is implying not enough eligible people are applying and have teams going into the “obama depression areas [i. e. East of IH 35]” to make sure they understand how to apply.

The campaign is targeted at the elderly, working poor, the unemployed and Hispanics

If that’s not racist, I don’t know what is...singling out Hispanics as people who need food stamps? The very idea of needing foodstamps or you even suggesting to me that I need food stamps is degrading. This immediately says there are no successful, rich Hispanics. If it explicitly said that it targeted blacks that would be called racist. Hispanic is not an economic status, it’s an ethnicity.

I thought that the liberals were supposed to be anti-racism?????

Here’s just another example that they are not.
