Boatload of subsidies buoy new South S.F. Ferry
San Francisco Chronicle, Bay Area ^ | 6/25/2012 | Phil Matier

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – It turns out that the much-heralded new ferry line between South San Francisco, Oakland and Alameda is being subsidized – heavily – by the public.

The numbers have been crunched, revealing that for every $14 round trip ticket sold, the public has – or will – kick in nearly $100. In all, the subsidies for the new ferry service total roughly $94 million over a 20 year period.

Among the publicly-financed elements of the transit service: the Oyster Point Ferry Terminal, paid for largely with San Mateo County sales tax funds; Bay Area bridge tolls, which funded $16 million for two 140-seat ferries and a $2.6 million annual operating subsidy.

The ferry service, which debuted earlier this month, is expected to transport 100,000 riders annually.

KCBS, CBS 5 and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier Reports:

Typical Green Crony faux capitalism at work in the Bay Area.

Taxpayers have or will fund nearly $100 for each $14 ticket.

The ferry landing is close to where I work.
I was wondering how much the state kicked in.

How in the world did anyone come to the conclusion that San Francico needs more ferries?

Sorry, but not being a citizen of any of the involved cities and state, I couldn’t care less what California spends its locally gotten taxes and tolls on.

I’m not surprised at the subsidies.

But let me tell you I’m SHOCKED that CBS/Chron are reporting on them.

I’m sure that some tax $’s from every state are helping to pay or each ferry ride.

The GayRonicle seems to be developing a duo personality the past few months. They have been publishing articles like this one some severe anti liberal political cartoons.

I have a neighbor who sends me a link re the new side. That is how I became aware of its.

At some point, (some) folks in a dying media industry may figure out how to expand their audience...

I’m sure that they have complained to Axelrod and other commie buds of Obama and have asked for hard to trace funding.

Chump change compared to the high-speed rail subsidies awaiting the California taxpayers.

“Chump change compared to the high-speed rail subsidies awaiting the California taxpayers.”

Yep, that will cause a lot of KY jelly to be used.

Again though, this state has the ability to grab hold of fed tax $’s and hide that reality from the other 49 states.

It's not just ferries. That's a typical subsidy for all public transportation. Fares usually only cover 10 to 15% of the costs.

Total cost is an extremely honest indicator of total energy resources consumed. If it costs 10 times more per passenger than driving an SUV, it is using 10 times more total energy and creates about 10 times more total pollution. Real green costs less, not more.

If we only count 5 workdays per week times 52 weeks, we get 260 days per year. At 100,000 annual passengers (presuming that figure is for round trips and not one way trips) that means that the daily workday level of round trip passengers is only 385 people per day. It gets even worse if one uses a 7 day week. What an amazing waste of money.

You must start to think like a liberal. They're probably quite proud of the subsidy -- probably see it as evidence of social sophistication or some such nonsense.

The tone of the article is pretty snarky.

Maybe they’re unhappy all this money went to ease the commute of rich white people instead of something really important like “mass transit” or “climate change”.

A good part of the costs are the union worker’s wages, pensons and healthcare. SF Muni drivers are the highest paid in the nation.
