Severely sunburned at school, Violet and Zoe Michener came home from field day so burned that their mother rushed them to the hospital.
It was scorching pain that could have been avoided.
Violet and Zoe Michener came home from field day so burned that their mother rushed them to the hospital.
The sisters aren't just fair-skinned. Zoe has a form of albinism that makes her particularly sun-sensitive.
"Yeah, I was crying about my sunburn," Zoe said.
Mother Jesse Michener of Tacoma, Wash. said she regrets not putting sunscreen on them that morning since it was raining.
Even so, doctors recommend re-applying every 2 to 3 hours when outside but that's against their school rules.
"They couldn't even reapply sunscreen without a doctor's note. They couldn't carry that in their backbacks," said Jesse Michener.
The school district said it has to ban sunscreen because it's state law.

Aww Jeez, I thought I caught that first post before it launched.
My bad.
Another reason...
HUH?
Since WHEN?
I see it all over the shelves here in Vt in all kinds of stores as I did when I spent 3 months in Florida this past Winter.
The parents should have dressed the kid for outdoor sun exposure. We didn't have sunscreen in my day and fair skinned kids wore hats and shirts, even when swimming, here in AZ. Or mommy should have kept the sun-sensitive darling home that day.
"It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong."
Thomas Sowell
We see/read this nonsense almost every day and yet there are still those who support the current commie union teacher infested public school system.
Why on earth, given all of recorded history, do people continue to put faith in government doing anything correct?
It would seem only our founders had the brains to grasp this simple concept, and the communists have been working for decades to bury the founders wisdom. Seems others need to get buried.
I would submit that this was ‘first hand’ child abuse.
As such any school official that participated in the decision should be registered as a child abuser, and forbidden by law from ever holding a position again where children were involved.
I am so sick of these limp wristed Leftist abusers.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
With all the broohaha about skin cancer and the medical community recommending wearing sunscreen even in the winter, because, LORD knows, someone's skin might catch a ray or two or UV and get skin cancer, WTH is this school doing BANNING sunscreen?!?!?!?!
The folks here have all the bases covered.
Look a little closer at the burn marks. She was not wearing a bikini top to the field day! The video shows a still of her shoulder with a yellow strap on it, but the white area of her skin is much, much wider there.
Come on, it’s Tacoma, Washington. I’ve been to the Seattle area many times. I’d say collectively over the past 10 years at least 60 days and there were only 2 days where it had SOME sunshine. The mother even said it was raining that morning. Big, big difference from Arizona.
Now if the parents didn’t provide raincoats, galoshes and umbrellas; that would be child abuse!
Here's a novel idea. Shut down all compulsory and socialist entitlement government K-12 schooling. Let parents, **private** school teachers, and **private** school principals decide these matters PRIVATELY!
School policy is not the cause of this. Poor parenting is. If I was the Mom I would keep my mouth shut less I be thought a fool for not properly preparing my child for a day outdoors.
Some other kind of bathing suit, then. Still an unwise choice under the circumstances, but one can always say that with hindsight.
an example of what Billy Beck calls “the Endarkenment”
perhaps. looks like lawyer bait also
