Teen Who Saved Siblings From Intruders Is Why I'll Teach My Kids to Shoot a Gun (VIDEO)(AZ)

How often does a story about a teenager and a handgun have a happy ending? This one definitely does: A 14-year-old boy in Phoenix saved his younger siblings' lives by shooting and critically wounding an armed intruder with a handgun. Police say the boy was babysitting his 8, 10, and 12-year-old siblings when a woman he didn't recognize started knocking on the door. Because she was unfamiliar, he didn't let her in the house ... but just a little while later, a strange man started pounding on the door. The teen apparently ran upstairs to get the handgun, and when he got back to the top of the stairs, the man broke down the door and pointed a gun at the boy and his siblings.

That's when the 14-year-old pulled the trigger, shooting the suspect in the chest. Then he grabbed his siblings and ran to a neighbor's house, where he called the police. The suspect is now in the hospital but is expected to go straight to jail once he recovers.

This story could have ended very badly if that 14-year-old boy didn't know how to shoot a gun, but he did -- and I'm going to guess he's had a decent amount of target practice, too, since he got the guy in the chest on his first try. Thank god his parents (I'm assuming) taught him the proper way to handle a gun! I'm not saying guns and kids are always a good mix -- indeed, often they're an incredibly dangerous combination. But maybe that's because kids generally aren't educated about guns and how to use them properly. I don't have a gun in my house and my kids can barely use a can opener, but if I did have a gun and they were older, I'd want them to learn how to shoot it.

Do you think it's a good thing for teens to know how to handle guns?

Nope, that's my blue twisted steel grandson, we raise them lean and mean around here.

When he started shooting he barely outweighed the rifles he was using.

I believe you can stand very proud of that handsome young man. Looks like he is able to look anyone in the eye as a equal. Kudos Sir.

If you have a gun in the house, everyone who lives there should have training.
Actually, everybody should have basic gun training, period.
If kids can be taught safe sex, they can certainly learn firearm safety.

Congratulations! He looks like a keeper. =)

(I don’t think I’d mess with him, if I was a crook.)

I like the “step” approach to gun training for children, which starts them on BB guns, to learn basic marksmanship with an inexpensive ammo, then .22 shorts with iron sights and .22 LR with a scope. Lots of practice cleaning as well.

I agree wholeheartedly as my dad did that with me and my brothers. I actually won first place in a district wide 4-H shooting contest as a 13 year old. My nine year old grandson can "shoot your eye out" right now if I told him to. We sit in the empty stock pond and destroy as much dirt as we can with his 10/22. Good Times.

The tactic around here is to have the female see if the house is occupied or not. And if not - they break in. Happened to a young girl just up the street. She ignored the knock. Shortly after she heard a noise in the back of the house (sliding door jimmed open).

She gets up from the computer, goes in the hallway and sees the guy. The guy swears and runs out the back. She runs out the front to a neighbor. The guy RETURNS! running into the house through the now open front door and exits the rear after a few minutes inside.

Cops did finally catch him.

Our kids are told to NEVER open the door for a stranger and only select neighbors. Never a cop either. For strangers, if they are alone, they are to yell “DAD - there’s someone at the door!!” pause.... “I don’t know who it is!” pause Yelling out the upstairs window “Sorry - we don’t want any!”

"Tori Nonaka (15) shooting at the 2010 Pro-Am match. Tulsa. OK"

Fifteen year old girl hits the targets using her sights and knowing how to "run the gun" (watch the reload at 1:52).
