Pharr Police Say Botched Home Invasion was Random[1 shot in South Texas]

PHARR - Investigators say a random home burglary today went awry leaving one suspect shot, another in custody and a third one on the lam.

Officials said three men broke into a home on the 700 block of West Bronze Avenue just after 11 a.m. The homeowner confronted the intruders and shot one in face with a shotgun. He held a second suspect at gunpoint until police arrived. The third suspect fled the scene in a green Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said. The injured suspect is in stable but critical condition at a local hospital.

"We're trying to piece this together," Pharr Police Chief Ruben Villescas said. "Imagine this and any other homeowner that finds somebody coming in. ... He's distraught right now. ... So we'll take our time doing the interviews with him and make sure we capture all the information correctly"

Police said the incident was not a drug-related home invasion. Villescas said it was a random burglary in the middle of the day.

"This happened at 11 o'clock, and my kids are out at 11. Now I have to be outside with them. Not just my kids, but all the kids that like to hang around here," said Amy Culliver, a concerned neighbor.

Police are asking anyone with information about the suspect's location to call 956-748-7700.

Dang, that dude should be thankful he is alive and should strongly consider repenting and going on the straight and narrow from here on out. A shotgun blast to the face is not something that many would survive.

You shoot with what you have handy.

Reminds me of that old joke about the cop questioning the guy who killed a home invader.

Why did you have to shoot him SIX times?

Because I only had six chambers in my revolver and was in fear of my life.

"Investigators say a random home burglary today went awry..."

So how would they have described this if the suspects hadn't been shot or captured?

"A random home burglarly was conducted flawlessly today..."?

You shoot with what you have handy.

Which goes to show, it is a good idea to keep handy defensive ammo if you want to use your firearm as a defensive weapon.

Birdshot is good if you are worried about being attacked by birds.

Hmmm, maybe I should send this home owner some of my special loads ... 9 #2 buck in a high brass case, roll crimped to 2 1/8 inches so you get an extra round in the mag; penetration is 13 to 15 inches.

Shotgun penetration in the gelatin block shots are very graphic and easy to understand.

Indeed - Both the MSM and the police try to soften the crime.

‘Botched’ as if it is a high school chemistry experiment gone wrong not a violent crime. “Random’ so as to infer no worries to the general public. It is just anomaly.

Yep...and I think it was Joaquin Jackson, Texas Ranger, who tells this little anecdote:

Some schlub: “Why do you carry a .45?”

Jackson: “’Cause they don’t make a .46.”

I really appreciate the link.

But I believe from experience the following negates the results of this test.

All of these shots were taken from a known distance and angle into bare Ordinance Gelatin in a controlled environment. This does not take into consideration the effects clothing, weather, range, temperature, cover, or body structure.”

I watched a friend get shot in the butt while wearing heavy insulated coveralls, like Carhartt, tough outer material.

The bird shot that was being used tore up the outer fabric layer but not a single pellet broke the skin.

After the shootee got off the ground (he was leaning over to tie a bootlace) he beat the crap out of the novice kid walking with his finger on the trigger.

In light birdshot, clothing makes a big difference. The Box O’ Truth Web site uses denim cloth in their penetration test.

Birdshot is good if you are worried about being attacked by birds.

Probably, but bird shot in the face, at close range, is still going to do damage to the perp. 00 buck would be better.

The third burglar was arrested later in the day in Alamo, according to a Pharr police news release.

I tend to look at it the other way around...it clarifies exactly what happens if your friend was bent over mooning someone...2 inches of penetration give or take with #8 birdshot. That is on bare skin.
I love the BoT site, but have always questioned tests with a layer or two of denim as being a really good representation of clothing. Of course all tests are really an approximation...even the gelatin. With Denim tests, first they almost always put it directly against the medium (not hanging loosely 1/2 inch in front, they rarely test with other materials like a down jacket or insulated coveralls etc.
Using the bare gelatin tests, with over penetration dry wall tests, the BoT tests etc, for me the absolute smallest I would go is #4 birdshot (.13 diameter shot) with a preference for the next size up that is readily available, #4 buckshot (.24 diameter). If I could find it, I think BB or T (.18 - .20) is probably the best home defense indoor (10-15 foot range) shot. It will penetrate clothing sufficiently and a miss does not go through too many walls. I would have first two rounds of T followed by two rounds of #1 buckshot (.30) with the theory that if I am still shooting after two rounds I am no longer as concerned about penetration and my initial adrenaline rush/nerves will have quieted somewhat and scenario will either be point-blank range or in a defensive position/posture hopefully with time to consider what is behind the target and well aimed shots.

I see the BOT tests to determine stopping power after the decision to use deadly force.

Most recommend shooting at the body mass, rarely is that bare skin.

Granted we wear pretty light layers here in Houston during the summer. But people don’t typically swap ammo choices for summer versus winter. So I want to know results as if I was shooting through a jacket.

I suspect it matters less outside of birdshot when the projectiles individually have more significant mass.

I think birdshot is useful if you want to scare someone into stopping their attack. Buckshot and larger is better for eliminating the choice from the attacker and ending it completely.
