Obama’s Pyrrhic Victory
Dick Morris.Com ^ | June 27,2012 | Dick Morris

Today, Barack Obama won the battle but will lose the war. The Supreme Court decision makes Obamacare the central issue in the 2012 election, just like it was in the 2010 election. And we know how that turned out.

The Court has sustained the individual mandate. That imposes on us a mandate: To defeat Obama and take the Senate. Now that is the only way we can kill this horrible law.

Public opinion has rejected this law for two years now by about the same margin: 40% support; 55% oppose. While the Court decision may give the law a short term positive bump, the underlying reality of the costs of the program and the increases in everyone’s health insurance rates it is already triggering will eliminate any near term gain. Ultimately, it will still be 40-55 against the law.

Right now, presidential polls show Romney and Obama both in the mid-40s. The single most unpopular thing Obama has done is the health care law. Now it is going to be the lynchpin issue. It means that the election itself will increasingly be polarized around opinions of the health care law – a fifteen point loser for the Democrats.

In a real sense, the Supreme Court did not let Obama off the hook by striking down the law. Now he will have to defend it during the election.

Remember what this law does. It requires everyone to spend upwards of 7 percent of their income on health insurance or pay a fine of several thousand dollars. Neither is an attractive alternative for the young and the poor who are the president’s political base. And, with the expansion of Medicaid rejected by the Court, the government will not be there to help them. I

This hopeful argument would be a whole lot more convincing if the GOP nominee were anybody besides the author of the law that the liberal justices correctly recognized as the model for ObamaCare.

These morons now running around saying they have free healthcare do not know what is really happening. They now have a debt of either paying a fine or signing up for healthcare. They will now have to pay!

Your point about RomneyCare is well taken, but I see this having a greater impact on the down-ticket races: Dem Congresscritters will now have to explain their votes for a huge tax increase to the voters.

When they finally get off the couch (and Mommy and Daddy's policy) and find a job, they may be surprised that employers no longer offer Health Care as a benefit.

How does someone without a job pay a premium or a fine?

Probably with an EBT card. They seem to be good for everything else.

Excellent question. And how many fewer jobs will there be now? What mess and the Democrats own it, lock, stock and barrel.

They don’t. What they do is join OWS to demand that those that do have a job pay for their premium.

A lot of those employers won’t be able to continue to offer the benefit of a job, let alone health insurance. I hope all those tools who voted for Obama understand just how critical entreprenurial skills are becoming. Soon it’s going to be create your own job or government teat.

The Court has sustained the individual mandate.

Specifically, the court has determined that the individual mandate is a TAX.

It's the 0bamaTAX. 0bama is the biggest TAX-raiser in US history. 0bama is trying to TAX us to death. 0bama is killing the medical care industry with onerous and punitive TAXES.

SCOTUS was wrong. Roberts is a toad.

BUT 0bama imposes draconian, punitive, onerous TAXES on the American people.

We need to get rid of that TAX-hiking bastard 0bama.

If the Republicans have any brains at all, this idea will be central to their campaigns

I disagree. Politically Romney's in a good position on this issue. Democrats cannot with a straight face paint him as uncaring on healthcare. They have to acknowledge his MA program offered a blueprint.

Romney can say he knows what went right and wrong, talks about parts he likes which poll well, and he has as good an argument on being able to "run the economy" as any.

In terms of being able to win the moderates who decide elections, we could do worse than Mitt Romney as the GOP nominee.

If anyone was going to penalize Romney for RomneyCare it would've been GOP primary voters. It didn't happen, he'll be the nominee. It's time to shift gears towards winning over the general electorate for November.

I think that the Obamamugabe plan has those kids supposedly covered until they’re 26. Question is: how are they either going to find the money to buy health insurance or pay the fine for not having it? Bet there will be another government agency that will provide grants to them to pay for it.

YES!!!

Republicans running for congress would do well to constantly tar the democRAT party with the "tax-hike" brush.

It would have the singular virtue of being true.

The bill was supposed to provide subsidies for those poor or without jobs and they could’ve been shifted to Medicare but with the Medicare changed struck down, that’s an open question since states can refuse to participate in the new scheme.

The bigger issue is that Supreme Court appointments have effectively been eliminated as a compelling reason to vote for a Republican presidential candidate.

I'm remarkably serene about this whole thing.
