The U.S. Supreme Court today voted to uphold the Affordable Care Act, refusing to overturn the unpopular law and sending the issue back to voters to decide in the upcoming presidential election.
The 5-4 decision found the individual mandate at the heart of the law was a tax and therefore allowable under Congress constitutional power to levy taxes. Roberts joined the conservative wing in finding the law otherwise would have violated the Commerce Clause, however, by exceeding the power of Congress.
The decision is a victory for liberals who for decades had been pushing for a federal law to provide health insurance to every citizen. Its also likely to be a boon for presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who can now campaign even more vigorously on a platform of repealing the unpopular law modeled, ironically enough, on one he signed as Massachusetts governor and replace it with less intrusive measures. (Heres my early take on the decision itself: Roberts Upholds Obamacare, And the Courts Authority, Too)
The Supreme Courts decision today leaves in place a highly complex law, many of whose most expensive provisions kick in in 2014. Heres what to expect:

The fact that Roberts didn’t strike down Obamacare isn’t inherently a bad thing, IMHO. Why? The reason here is, he gave an interpretation of the law. Would anyone want someone to always be able to dictate laws from the bench? Would anyone disagree that the mandate really is a tax? Vote in the Senate, vote for the president, who BTW can actually appoint Supreme Court justices like Sotomayor, and so on.
What comes next?
The killing expands to the old, the disabled, the sick, the injured vets and anyone who isn’t a Democrat, minority, muslim/Amish or illegal alien.
How supremely cunning of the AQ @ 1600 PA Av, to get us to kill ourselves with our own law.
I disagree. If it is a tax, then what kind of tax is it? I can't think of a single tax in existence today that taxes me for something I do not buy or for something I do not do. Can you give me an example of a tax like that?
They’re going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg, they won’t understand that until it’s too late.
Sorry, tax increase.
Look at your phone bill.
Those that you speak of aren’t, for the most part, able to produce anything at all. The do not want us dead. We are their slaves through taxation. The supreme court has given the all the room they will ever need to try and tax us into submission.
They don’t like what we say. They can tax that and use the IRS to police us. They don’t like our guns they can levy property taxes on any gun you have and any ammunition you purchase (that is if you have enough left to purchase those things to begin with). The supreme court said it was okay that the constitution granted them unlimited power to tax us for absolutely anything they wanted to.
We must step up now and limit the governments power to levy taxes on us. We must police them. It is our job as citizens and the best way to that is limit their powers. Or they will kill off the old or the sick in order to protect their theft of anything good and decent in the world.
What about my phone bill? I receive a phone bill, and pay the associated taxes, even for services I may never use, because I actively contacted the phone company and set up an account.
Try again.
After thinking and moping about all day on this SCOTUS ruling I have come from wanting to throttle Justice Roberts, to thinking he’s a freakin’ genius.
He’s handed the GOP plenty of weapons to win the Senate and put Mittens in the WHouse.
It’s a tax, Obama lied about no taxes, the cost increases, employers saying they will kill company insurance and pay the fines, er taxes...there’s lots more to this.
Roberts is screwing over Obammer for the disrespect shown by Obozamma at the SOTU speach.
FUBO!
All those young protesters cheering for Obamacare, wait until you have. Family and insurance becomes 1/3 of your total income. By the time they are my age they will face health care death panels.
Scott Walker said that WI will not implement obamacare. I don’t know if he means the medicaid expansion or the whole thing. I don’t understand the law. I’m not sure anybody understands this law fully.

Not a fan of Romney, but Roberts just sealed the deal for him.
There’s a “Universal Service Fee” that’s been collected since the 1930s. I consider it a tax. Now, if you go to the gov website there are all kinds of charges on the phone bill that they’re quick to point out “this is not a tax because it’s not collected by the federal government”.
You are actually using a phone in order to be taxed on it.....What are you consuming in order to be charged with this tax.....Air?
I keep telling you, this is *not* an example. There was a time I did not have a telephone. Guess what? During that time I did *not* pay the Universal Service Fee. I pay the Universal Service Fee now though, but *only* because I contacted a phone company and set up an account.
It's a poll tax, or "Tax per head." Very common throughout history. Margaret Thatcher actually got one passed for awhile.
