Con Edison has authorized a strike if necessary; its contract expires at midnight Saturday.
The second heat wave of the summer will again test the power grid in our area just as a deadline comes for a possible Con Edison strike. Temperatures reached 98 degrees at LaGuardia Airport Friday, while Newark, N.J. saw 97 and Central Park hit 93.
A mix of sun and clouds continues Saturday and temperatures will linger in the muggy low- to mid-90s. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon.
Con Edison and its workers are in the middle of contract negotiations, with the current contract for Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America expiring at midnight Saturday. John Melia, a spokesman for the union that represents about 8,500 workers, said there are issues over pensions. He said members in May authorized a strike if necessary.
Con Ed said it looked forward to "productive discussions with the union leadership on a new contract that's fair and equitable for our employees and customers."
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the city during the daytime hours Friday and Saturday. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous activity and make sure to check on pets and elderly neighbors. Those who have to work outside are advised to schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas.

The steambath continues Sunday and Monday, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 90s. Temperatures blazed across the metropolitan area last week, sending children to sprinklers as authorities urged people working outdoors to drink plenty of water and stay in the shade.
The sweltering weather was also blamed for the death of an 81-year-old man. The official cause of death for the unidentified Queens man was "hyperthermia due to environmental exposure with underlying conditions."
If only we had access to more energy. But alas, we do not. America: Land of no natural resources...

That would destroy them in the court of public opinion.
A union induced grid collapse at 100 deg and 60% humidity would be the best thing that could happen to the east coast. It would truly suck for good people but it would quickly rid the idiots of their total union worship.
Do wonders for the extraction and power (plant building) industry as well.
People need to feel the pain to see the light.

NEW YORK (CBS 2/WCBS 880) — Call it the “blizzard backlash.”
Criminal investigations are under way to find out why it took so long to dig out from last week’s massive snow storm.

One video is now in the hands of prosecutors. It shows two sanitation trucks driving down 155th Street in the Whitestone section of Queens after the blizzard without removing the snow.
Their plows were apparently raised and the snow was left untouched in their wake, apparent proof that some in the Sanitation Department engineered a work slowdown.
“[It’s a] tremendous shock,” said NYC Councilman Daniel Halloran, R-Queens.
Look for the UNION Label......and die.
It was surprising to see so many comments against the unions. Sheer outrage - only a couple of comments that stuck up for the unions.
The flames just keep a-comin’. You’d think this MSM mouthpiece was a conservative rag. The NYC public, facing a steamy heat wave, is fed up to HERE with the unions threatening a walk out in the middle of it. Any idea of getting union sympathy just died.
Many of the commenters in today's article talked about the snowplow drivers during the blizzard - they're still angry about it. People died.

Reminds me of the time during the Korean war when the steel workers were going to go on strike...President Truman nationalized the steel mills and sent in the Army to run them. Or when the air traffic controllers went on strike and President Reagan fired them all...and made it stick. We won’t see any decisive action like that even this time although old Bloomers has his nose up the white house’s butt. The People be damned!! Sad.

Not only old Bloomers. Obummer is shrewd enough to not kill the golden goose (unions). If he even thought about nationalizing the Con Ed union thugs, his campaign money would dry up in a heartbeat.
It was meant to be sarcasm. Perhaps all the greenies who will now be sweating and sweltering might change their minds. Not!
Good observation, and the resulting deaths wouldn’t help during this anti-union election year.
Threats like this are one of the MANY reasons I have despised unions since I was relatively young. The me, me, me mentality of the losers who join unions is disgusting. I would like to see every union in the country broken before I leave this earth. They are destroyers and parasites.

I am amazed that A: the unions are this arrogant after the Walker routing and B: that the gen population back there is so willing to accept their ‘pain’ knowing they sit on 200+ years of cheap energy the politicians deny them.
Eventually they will get sick of the pain and inflict some of their own. At least I hope.
