Wauwatosa - U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan is at ease and on message when he talks about America's fiscal challenges.
But when it comes to talking about the possibility of being tapped as the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee, the Janesville native clams up.
"Next question," Ryan said Tuesday when asked what it was like to be vetted for the position by presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
"I don't think it's helpful to the Romney campaign to fuel this speculation, so I don't think it's in their interest to comment on these things. So that's why I'm not," Ryan said.
Is Ryan on the VP shortlist? That's a closely held secret by the Romney campaign.
But Ryan's name has popped up in media speculation. Others who have been mentioned include U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) and governors Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Chris Christie of New Jersey and Bob McDonnell of Virginia.
Gov. Scott Walker said he'd like to see Ryan on the national ticket and said he's a charter member of the "Paul Ryan fan club."
"What I like about the fact that Paul is on that list isn't even because he's from Wisconsin; it shows to me that people like Governor Romney are not just serious about winning but about governing," Walker said.

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (right) and Gov. Scott Walker discuss President Barack Obamas economic policies and why they think presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney should be elected Tuesday in Wauwatosa.
Wisconsin Ryan ping
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
If Romney wants somebody who appeals to the conservative base, there are plenty of them around who are not currently holding public office.
As a mathematical whiz on government budget numbers, Ryan needs to stay where he is and start calling Buckwheat a 30 IQ ignoramus who couldn’t measure out a cup of flour to make really crappy Waffle House pancakes.
That’s his historic place at the moment. Better things may happen later. Go, Ryan!
I would hope for a Rand Paul from the fiscally conservative side of the brain pool, smart, but who is far more vocal, and deadly serious beyond just the decimal point issues alone. He is hell on wheels against EPA and other big government intrusions.
I’m going to say that Paul Ryan is not all that conservative outside his niche of economic matters and the governor of Wisconsin is quite indebted to Ryan, as he should be, for the moral support and yeoman’s work that Ryan lent Walker during his money fight in the state.
We’re highly unlikely to get a social conservative like Bachman, or a West.
Oh, how right you are!
I’m thinking West is the best (hmmm... might be a good bumper sticker). A lot of the names I’ve heard being kicked around would make good VPs, but they might not have the “wow factor” needed for a ticket. Gotta have someone who stands out, with maximum charisma, and who isn’t afraid to be blunt and un-PC,
I'm confused by your statement. Are you implying that Ryan is not a social conservative? I've been following Ryan for a couple of years now and everything I've read about him is that he is a strong social conservative.

If they want him out of the way, make him VP instead of chairman of Ways and Means.
Not a chance, remember Palin made McinSane look dead.
No, not Rand Paul - we cannot afford to lose a single seat in the Senate if Obamacare is to be repealed. Paul’s replacement would be appointed by a Democrat governor who is implementing Obamacare in Kentucky full steam ahead.
No - not because there is anything wrong with Ayotte per se, but because NH has a Dem governor that would appoint her replacement - we have to have every seat possible in the Senate if there is to be any hope of repealing Obamacare.
I like Michele o.k., but I’d be nervous as hell if she was the VP pick. She has a tendency to misspeak and get her facts wrong. The media would do the same to her that they did to Sarah, i.e. make her out to be an airhead.
The media has convinced enough people that Sarah is a dolt that she’d never win national office. But, what she really wants, is NOT the VP slot............
SARAH PALIN FOR ENERGY SECRETARY. (That’s the job she really wants; and she’d do great at it and the Libs’ heads would explode.
Ryan is a worker bee on the economy/healthcare front. Perhaps that is why he is silent on social issues, like religious liberty, abortion inclusions in every government handout, EPA, etc.
Nothing comes from Ryan on issues that the Rand Paul types hit hard.
Kind of like Romney is slow to even care that recent court rulings have been exploding all around us.
Thank you. Good point.
