Republican U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde has assets that top $50 million, according to a financial disclosure statement he provided the Senate Ethics Committee.
His extensive holdings, filed on June 29, would appear to make the Madison businessman the wealthiest candidate in the Senate race.
Hovde's assets range from roughly $58 million to $240 million, with holdings in myriad stocks, banks, real estate, as well as an investment in the Cayman Islands, his financial statement reported. His liabilities in loans, lines of credit and credit cards range from $5.2 million to $25.4 million.
The financial statements cover the period from Jan. 1, 2011, to June 29.
During this 18-month period, Hovde also had earned and noninvestment income of $993,825, records, primarily for management fees and fees for serving on the boards of companies.
In the Aug. 14 primary, Hovde is running against former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann, former Gov. Tommy Thompson and Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald (R-Horicon.) The winner will face U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, in November.
Hovde hails from a prominent real estate family in Madison. Working for many years in Washington, D.C., he built a fortune in real estate, asset management and banking.

Wisconsin Hovde ping
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
So what?
Apparently, he knows how to manage money.
Tar and feather him!!! /s
Frankly I can't imagine "wanting" to run for office...but good on him.
well, for one thing, it means he’s got too much to lose to be effective.
Thanks for the Hovde Ping..
While I reside in Texas now, I still follow Wisconsin poltics.. When I was kid,and living in Madison on Hovde Road, I would go fishing with his Uncle(?) Glenn Hovde in his Chris Craft run-a-bout. He comes from good stock... Good Luck to him..
I helped my aged mother fill out her absentee ballot...she voted for Hovde.
Assets 50m. How much are his liabilities? What is his net worth? I have 3 houses. But 2 are underwater.
This is the problem with sound byte journalism. It’s hard to get the the meaningful info.
My preference in the Wisconsin primary is Mark Neumann but I would be happy if any of them other than Tommy Thompson won. Unfortunately, Thompson will likely prevail through name recognition so we’ll have another RINO on our hands.
Of course I’d love to be pleasantly surprised as events unfurl.
If you’d read the whole article (requires a click on the link per FR and JS Online rules) you would know his liabilities. It’s right in the article.
Good for her. I didn’t know absentee voting was already going on. I need to get to City Hall and cast my ballot.
He says that he feels that it is important to do this for his kids. He considers it an obligation.
Good!
: )
Can’t wait to vote for Eric Hovde!
I'd just as soon my Congresscritter has his fortune amassed and offshore accounts established before running. Too many go there for the purpose of setting that stuff up.
The man he wants to replace sen kohl has hundreds of millions, that never bothered j/s before.
I like him as well, however we must use caution when supporting Madison republicans. They’ re not always what they seem. Ho does remind me of Ron Johnson, and he’s the real deal reformer.
Fair enough...........We need more like him.
