Those watching the Big Bay Boom in San Diego's Glorietta Bay witnessed what was either an accidental fireworks display -- or a very disappointing fireworks show.
Port District authorities said a "technical difficulty" resulted in all the fireworks going off at once.
"We sincerely apologize for the technical glitch that affected the #BigBayBoom. Event producers are currently investigating the cause," read a Tweet from the Port of San Diego.
The Port hires the company Garden State Fireworks to operate the fireworks show. A spokesperson with the company confirmed that there was a technical issue in the show, but officials are still trying to determine what happened.
About 5 minutes before the show was supposed to start, a sudden burst of fireworks shot into the air near the bay. Throughout downtown San Diego, a large rumble could be felt just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday night.
It appeared that hundreds of fireworks were set off at the same time. The explosions lasted a few seconds.

At least 3 barges in different parts of the bay all went up at once.
Wow! Must have been something to see!
I was on the docks in front of the Marriott with my dslr and just didn’t have the picture framed up. Missed the shot. It was huge.
Botched? It was the Greatest Firework Show I have ever seen. It was TREMENDOUS! Lets do it again!
Sudden, premature detonation? Sigh... It happens. Maybe more often with a younger ah "display" company, less often with a more "mature" and experienced display company... But hey, sometimes things just happen. Hey, think of it as a compliment to how....oh never mind!
Most of these big civic fireworks displays have systems ran by a computer. I can imagine the complexity involved and what happens when the operator makes one mistaken mouse click. BOOM!
Bummer.
Things went flawlessly here
Hey, it was in the bay, and it was a bang...a really big bang, so they got what was advertised. Whatta they griping about?
Typical Union Job.
Next year they will require more funding to prevent a repeat of the fiasco.
At least the folks in San Diego got to see fireworks. Here in Pt. Jervis, NY we didn’t have a display because of budget constraints. Further upriver in Narrowsburg, their fireworks show was cancelled because the DEC claims it would’ve disturbed a bald eagles’ nest near the Delaware.
They outlawed the Miss Emersom contest on Fiesta Island, I would rather see Miss Emersom than some miscalculated fireworks display
You see where this crap is going.
THAT SUX!
Thunder and Lightning Never disturb those critters.
It’s probably best to take away everyone’s fun JUST TO BE SAFE /S
THAT SUX!

Meep! Meep!
Guess that is the last time we will use ACME for anything.

One of the most profound things I have read here was a fellow today who pointed out that this administration is quite enamored of themselves for providing record levels of food stamps, but the same administration advises that we will be FINED if we feed the animals as we DON’T WANT THEM TO BECOME DEPENDENT.
It was a screw up of epic proportions. You need to move back here and straighten this place out.
LOL. I'll be back to live there again, "some day."
I'm so sad this happened. I have one little granddaughter here with me. We went down to the river tonight to watch the fireworks. They're shot off from a boat, so it felt and looked like the display was coming right at us. She loves the Fourth here for this very reason, and makes certain she's here every year.
I trust you and yours are well and happy. Hope there' something going on during the time I'm taking her back home - Aug 4- 14, so FReepers can get together!
God bless and keep you, dear friend.

Aw....you are KIDDING. Miss Emersom is one of the finest traditions of San Diego!
