A plan that offers Obama a fighting chance
The Washington Post ^ | July 5, 2012 | Jonathan Rauch

At this point in 1980, Jimmy Carter was on the path to oblivion but didn’t know it. Barack Obama may share Carter’s fate if he doesn’t change course soon.

The 1980 presidential race was neck and neck until the end. It finally broke for Ronald Reagan when voters concluded that Carter could not cope with the economy and that Reagan, despite his conspicuous flaws as a candidate, was a viable alternative.............

This election will be decided largely by independent voters, most of whom can probably tell you that Mitt Romney’s economic plan is to repeal Obamacare and shrink the government. It may not make much sense, but it’s clear. Ask what Obama’s plan is, and they won’t be certain. They will know, however, that what he has done hasn’t worked. And by the fall, many independents will have made up their minds.

The president’s failure, so far, to show that he understands the scope of the economy’s problems and knows how to fix them does not stem from having nothing to say: investment in education, energy, innovation and infrastructure are reasonable things. But they are also slow-acting, small-bore stuff. Such talk does not include additional economic stimulus, an element that many economists, especially Democratic-leaning ones, consider crucial to prevent a double-dip recession. Nor does it deal realistically with long-term growth in spending.

So Obama should draw a map and send it to Capitol Hill in the form of a bill — a president’s strongest statement that he intends action. A big legislative proposal can frame the issue and paint Obama’s intentions in bold colors. It should include three elements:..........

I’ll tell you what his theme should be: Unleash America’s Greatness.

He should base his campaign around the idea that American Exceptionalism is being purposefully restrained by the current Administration and he views his job to be freeing the giant and getting out of its way.

Govt regulation is tying down America’s traditional engine of economic growth. We have a history of powering the world’s economy. This Administration won’t even let us power our own.

America built the premiere health care system of the world. It educates most of the worlds doctors and provides most of the innovations. Instead of killing the golden goose with Obamatax, would should unleash the greatness of America’s heath care system.

The federal model was ingenious. Mitty should quote Franklin, if you can keep it. Say his job IS to empower our Republic and its federal model. States should lead the way. (A federalist campaign against statism is really his only defense against Romneytax.) Unleash the federal model that made America great.

He should say that Obama wants to move ‘forward’ with burdens that bind what makes us great. Romney wants to unleash America from the very restraints by which this Administration has tied down our greatness. Move forward with the failure and economic decline of the last four years? NEVER. Instead America needs to be unleashed from the last four years.

But then, I’m passionate about America. I have yet to see the same in the etch a sketch campaign...

“So Obama should draw a map and send it to Capitol Hill in the form of a bill”

If Obama ever drew a map of exactly where he wanted to take the country, he’d be buried in a landslide. Remember what happened to George McGovern (who ran as an unabashed liberal) and Walter Mondale (who merely reported his desire to raise taxes).

Romney’s message is “Believe in America”, and his sub-theme is “Obama’s not working.”

Does it sound like “Hope and Change”?

Yes it does. Do I believe it’s a great slogan? No. But I thought Hope and Change was ridiculous. McCain never found a slogan that he could stick with for more than two weeks.

“Forward” is a joke.

Romney will win in November because he will raise enough money to counter the Obama negative campaign.

The article is here on FR and they are griping about much more than that. He has no economic plan... he has no health plan to talk about other than his original version of obamacare... he is running on the reality that obama is the worst president ever... and that is true... but then mitt offers no reason as to why he is better and every day a new flip flop hits the media. It was a tax before it wasn't a tax and then it was a tax on July 2 but then on July 4... it wasn't a tax again. He was for abortion before he was against it. He was for gun control before he wasn't for it. He was never part of the Reagan Revolution... he didn't like it or the man... but now he does etc etc etc. He is becoming the joke that kerry was.

Most important thing to understand is this.

Blacks will vote for Obama.
Gays will vote for Obama.
Illegals and Criminals will vote for Obama.
The 10% of useful idiots in the Democrat party will vote for Obama.
Single women who cannot attract a dog if they had a porkchop tied around their neck will vote for Obama.
The elderly who only watch CNN and network news will vote for Obama.

That comes out to about 35% of the country.

Okay, your eternal negativity, whining, and Romney-hate is grating at best, but now your are quite simply lying.

No economic plan? Here it is. Some 156 pages of plan. Some highlights include lower taxes, making Bush tax cuts permanent, lower spending, encouraging small business. Go and read it. Or don't, I don't care. But, don't say he has no plan when it's a click away.

Economic plan

No health care plan? Here IT is. No mention of his "original version of obamacare" except to give the power to the states to figure it out.

Health care plan

Gun rights:

Gun rights

We get it. You don't like Romney. I don't think any of us do. But from what I can tell you hope to celebrate an Obama victory. If not, you sure are working hard to make sure it happens. I used to ask the question "If Obama was purposely trying to destroy the economy, what would he do differently than what he is doing?" The answer was "Not much." Well, I ask the question, "What would you do differently than what you are if your goal was to re-elect Obama." The answer, "Not a thing."

Quack. Waddle. Duck.

OK FRiend... I went and read his page... he only has vague platitudes and generalities that soung really good... but nothing on how he will get any of that legislation in front of Congress... specifics of the bills that he will introduce and how he will implement those changes. Just another politician making promises that have absolutely nothing in them that would corner him into any real decision. This is no different than the two recent times mitt pulled a "no comment" on reversing obama's order to not enforce immigration laws and whether he supports the Arizona Immigration Law.

First... the mandate was a tax when he enforced it in his State as governor... then it wasn't a tax and then after roberts and his horrible decision... on July 2 he stated it was a tax... but then on July 4th it was once again not a tax. This is just like Clinton's, "I will lower taxes on the middle class" which became, "No matter how hard I work at it... I have looked at it and tried my best to find a way to lower taxes on the middle class... I just can't do it". Words are meaningless... most especially when a progressive like mitt romney says them.

Economic plan:

Mitt Romney will rebuild the foundations of the American economy on the principles of free enterprise, hard work, and innovation. His plan emphasizes critical structural adjustments rather than short-term fixes. It seeks to reduce taxes, spending, regulation, and government programs. It seeks to increase trade, energy production, human capital, and labor flexibility. It relinquishes power to the states instead of claiming to have the solution to every problem.

Any American living through this economic crisis will immediately recognize the severity of the break that Mitt Romney proposes from our current course. He is calling for a fundamental change in Washington's view of how economic growth and prosperity are achieved, how jobs are created, and how government can support these endeavors. It is at once a deeply conservative return to policies that have served our nation well and a highly ambitious departure from the policies of our current leadership. In short, it is a plan to get America back to work.

The link to a .pdf file is corrupt and three computers refuse to download it. As in every other case... generalities at best... no real specific plan or bills are listed... or which tax laws will be changed or how... and which regulations will be rescended and which will be modified and how they will be modified... just a political stump speech.

Health care:

Mitt's Plan

On his first day in office, Mitt Romney will issue an executive order that paves the way for the federal government to issue Obamacare waivers to all fifty states. He will then work with Congress to repeal the full legislation as quickly as possible.

In place of Obamacare, Mitt will pursue policies that give each state the power to craft a health care reform plan that is best for its own citizens. The federal government’s role will be to help markets work by creating a level playing field for competition.

He goes on to list things that he wants to do but no specifics on how he will actually do it. Once again just generalities and slogans. He also pledged not only to repeal obamacare... but also to REPLACE it. I have to look no further than that communist healthcare plan that he created, implemented and still brags about... and mitt and his perople are where obama got his plan from... and he is on record stating just that!

Gun Rights

As the Supreme Court recently reaffirmed, the Second Amendment protects one of the American people’s most basic and fundamental individual rights: “the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.” The Second Amendment is essential to the functioning of our free society. Mitt strongly supports the right of all law-abiding Americans to exercise their constitutionally protected right to own firearms and to use them for lawful purposes, including hunting, recreational shooting, self-defense, and the protection of family and property.

Like the majority of Americans, Mitt does not believe that the United States needs additional laws that restrict the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. He believes in the safe and responsible ownership and use of firearms and the right to lawfully manufacture and sell firearms and ammunition. He also recognizes the extraordinary number of jobs and other economic benefits that are produced by hunting, recreational shooting, and the firearms and ammunition industry, not the least of which is to fund wildlife and habitat conservation.

Mitt will enforce the laws already on the books and punish, to the fullest extent of the law, criminals who misuse firearms to commit crimes. But he does not support adding more laws and regulations that do nothing more than burden law-abiding citizens while being ignored by criminals. Mitt will also provide law enforcement with the proper and effective resources they need to deter, apprehend, and punish criminals.

As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt was proud to support legislation that expanded the rights of gun owners. He worked hard to advance the ability of law-abiding citizens to purchase and own firearms, while opposing liberal desires to create bureaucracy intended to burden gun owners and sportsmen. As governor, he also designated May 7th as “The Right to Bear Arms Day” in Massachusetts to honor law-abiding citizens and their right to “use firearms in defense of their families, persons, and property for all lawful purposes, including common defense.”

As president, Mitt will work to expand and enhance access and opportunities for Americans to hunt, shoot, and protect their families, homes and property, and he will fight the battle on all fronts to protect and promote the Second Amendment.

He was horrible on Gun Rights when he was a governor and he still pledges to sign an assault weapons ban if it passes his desk. Again... his words ring hollow and he has no plan to roll back the Unconstitutional laws on the books now. That is the problem with mitt... even if he says something you like... you never know if he means it. Your boy is a lying progressive... that is a fact!

Values

Mitt Romney is pro-life. He believes it speaks well of the country that almost all Americans recognize that abortion is a problem. And in the quiet of conscience, people of both political parties know that more than a million abortions a year cannot be squared with the good heart of America.

Mitt believes that life begins at conception and wishes that the laws of our nation reflected that view. But while the nation remains so divided, he believes that the right next step is for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade – a case of blatant judicial activism that took a decision that should be left to the people and placed it in the hands of unelected judges. With Roe overturned, states will be empowered through the democratic process to determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate.

mitt was for abortion and gay marriage... before he was against it. Still nothing but platitudes and slogans. mitt flip flops as much a kerry did... maybe more!

None of this involves any specifics... I want to know what kind of tax reform... which regulations will he try to repeal... will he sign a pledge to NOT vote for a Federal Assault Weapons Ban... and even then... if you do not get a signed pledge that is legally binding... your candidate will just do what he has always done... take the progressive path and lie to our faces while doing it.

You support the worst republican candidate that has ever been promoted by the gop... and he is running against the worst president that this republic has ever endured. This should be a landslide election for the gop but because your wonderful candidate is such a Conservative and is so liked and trusted by Americas... the coming election is going to be a tight one and mitt may very well lose.

I do not care if the truth grates on you... FReepmail Jim or hit the abuse button and see if you can get me banned. Good luck!

Oh... and I despise obama with every cell in my body... and I will not be happy if he wins. I will not be happy if mitt loses and I would rather mitt win than obama. I will not sell my soul to vote for an evil man... even if he is slightly less evil than obama. You see... I do not believe the man because I have paid attention to mitt for many years and there is one thing that I know for a fact... mitt romney is a progressive liar. I also do not believe that he has changed his ideology since the early 2000’s... and in almost every case... what he said as governor yesterday is just the opposite of what he says that he believes today.

Calling someone a liar will not win over any converts... and mitt is going to need every vote that he can muster. It is sad that he acts like he doesn't need us in the Base. He thinks it is ordained that he will be the next president. Reality shows that may very well not be the case. It is not my fault... look at mitt... there is the person that you need to blame... not Conservatives that refuse to be taken as fools again. 40 years of gop lies is enough for me. The only decent president that they have ever had on their ticket... the only one that I was actually proud to vote for was Reagan. I have voted for every single candidate that they have run since Nixon... up until now. I have donated over 100K over the years and I have worked on the ground. I have been a soldier on the front lines for the gop. romney will not get my vote because I do not like or trust the man and I do not like how his supporters and campaign treat those of us that dare to question his highness.

I also had trouble with downloading the .pdf file, but could click through it in the window on the web page. There is much more there than the paragraph you posted. First you say there is no plan. Then you say they are vague platitudes. Then you magically predict the future. What do you want? A 2,800 page bill that no one will read? You're just moving the goalposts. Nothing he put there would please you. If there was a typed bill, your comment would be, "How's he going to get that passed? What good's a bill without a sponsor?" or "He doesn't mean it" Wait, you did say that.

I do not care if the truth grates on you... FReepmail Jim or hit the abuse button and see if you can get me banned. Good luck!

The truth? You said he has no plan, so I showed you his plan and you think it's the truth that bothers me? As far as hitting the abuse button, why should I? I don't need any help slaying your lies. Keep on doing Obama's work.

If that is the case, but you can't use it to justify voting for Romney (a stance that I understand and accept even if I don't agree with it) then at least don't continue to further the Obama cause by dragging down Romney.

Calling someone a liar will not win over any converts

I wasn't trying to win any converts. I was correcting a factual innacuracy.

All that I was doing was telling the truth and you cannot refute anything that I said with garbage from mitt's website. I am not alone. The Washington Post had an article quoting some big money donors to mitt and they are saying the EXACT same things that I am saying. mitt thinks that he can skate into the White House. He can't and he is not trying to win it either. THAT is the truth!.

He has absolutely no specific plans beyond very general statements and that is what I stated. I am not the one that is trying to sell a turd as a ham sandwich. Instead of listening to me or even your own self... go to these links and listen to mitt romney in his own words. Wake up... your boy is a lying socialist whose only goal is to become president. He will do and say whatever it takes to win but he will not get specific because he does not want to defend himself or his positions. That did not work well for Bush and it brought us obama. Go and watch mitt in his own words... I do not believe him today... because I am convinced that the man in these two videos and his ideology are the same man and ideology that we see today.

or try this video...

Who you going to believe... mitt romney or mitt romney????????? Man what a loser. This is a man that will say whatever he needs to say and do whatever he needs to do to be elected and he has done this all of his life. Now go watch and learn... this is mitt romney unfiltered... no one will speak but mitt and the interviewer... no manipulation... if you speak English... it is clear as a bell.

.... One was a simple minded fool

Please do not buy into the "inept but good-hearted Granpa" of Carter's new historical persona. This man is an SOB of the first water; a bitter, trench-fighter Democrat partisan with a truly vicious streak a mile wide. Don't forget his time in office as Georgia's governor. It was a time of wild-ass and unrelenting Democrat corruption, with Jimma and his people in it up to their eyeballs.

Yeah, the big job was totally beyond him because he was essentially a micromanager whose main focus had always been directing the benefits to his circle of cronies who ran him. He was a lot like Obama in many ways, save one. He was a meddler and Obama takes great pains to do absolutely nothing except what he is told. BTW, Jimma is one lousy carpenter.
