Warning: your Internet may not work on Monday (how to detect and fix malware infection)

Posted on 07/07/2012 6:55:17 AM PDT by Innovative

An estimated 300,000 computers, most of them in the United States, Italy and India, could be infected and lose their Internet service, Queen's University associate professor Thomas Dean said Friday.

Dean said Canadians can go to www.dcwg.org to check if their computers are infected and take appropriate measures.

If computers have been infected due to the scam, they haven't been able to perform anti-virus software or system updates, leaving them vulnerable to other malware, said Dean, who teaches in Queen's University's department of electrical and computer engineering.

I don’t think they use those anymore. They have new and improved models.

Every router has an admin utility that you can access from your web browser by typing its IP into the URL window. To find the router's IP: 1. Open a command prompt. 2. Type "ipconfig" and press . 3. Look for the line that says "default gateway". The set of numbers that follows will be the IP address of the router. After typing this address into the browser, you will be prompted for a username and password.

Call me crazy, but I’ll take my chances rather than go to any site that has any connection to our government.

The way I see it is that my 'puter is not likely infected and would very likely be if I went to go to any government (or even sponsored) site to have "them" check my hard drive!!! Du'oh!! I believe my odds would be better hitting the lottery jackpot than having a that malware virus!

Like they aren’t watching you already. Haven’t you seen those black helicopters hanging around your house?

Black?? And all this time I was thinking they looked dark green, in fact olive drab green.

If the US had anything short of the schemer that now sits in the White Hut I’d say don’t worry, that normal accountability mechanisms mean they would not dare pull any hanky panky.

But with this I’d be surprised if my machine did not, at the least, get totally populated with pop up ads for The Won.

I refuse to visit some site that will basically take a snapshot of my configuration, software, and any websites I have visited, just because they are trying to scare me with some virus warning.

This scare is some invention of someone who wants access to our machines. How do you know they aren't downloading spyware to your machine when you click on the link?

From the page where you can check to see if you are infected:

http://www.dcwg.org/?page_id=381

“For example, the http://www.dns-ok.us/ will state if you are or are not infected (see below).

- No Software is Downloaded! The tools do not need to to load any software on your computer to perform the check.

- No changes are performed on your computer! Nothing is changed on your computer when you use sites like http://www.dns-ok.us/.

- No scanning! The “are you infected with DNS Changer” tool does not need to scan your computer.”

To check for infection and fix it, go to:

Did you try it and see if that's where you get the infection?

Sure, if the government said it, I should believe it. Just like I should believe this:

"If you already have insurance, the only thing that will change under my plan is that we will lower premiums. If you don't have health insurance, you'll be able to get the same kind of health insurance Members of Congress get for themselves."

-Barack Obama, 26 October 2008-

Or...

You could just DL Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (for free) and it will take care of it. I run it at least a couple of times a month (I never set anything for auto-run/DL) along with my Avira AV.

You are just so right, so absolutely, brilliantly, right.

Sometimes we lose sight of all that.

I recently had a virus, nasty thing peo’d me more than anything. All searches I did it would take me to THEIR page, middle of night Mexican music started playing, took up 95% of my system resources. Dealt with it for three months, got to know it, got to hate it.

I have 2 computers, little cheapie laptop thingies. Bought Microsoft office, actually paid money. Both computers installed. Had Excel, Word, One Note...an office organizer program.

I didn’t want to take the thing to a computer tech for the cost involved to fix the virus. I’m there, where anything pretty much over $50 wasn’t worth it for the value of the computer. It was a very difficult virus to get rid of, attached itself to some unimportant Windows program...PING, it was called.

The only thing stopped me from completely clearing the hard drive was concern about my Excel programs and all that. Oh I could re-install them and all my other little programs I’d put on that thing over the years but I just was wary about going there.

One day, sick of that awful, awful thing hijacking my computer and wondering why this wasn’t against the law, I just....poof....found a command...something to the effect...”restore computer to the state it was in when you bought it.”

Heh.

I hit that button and never looked back.

Now I can put Excel and all that stuff back on but you know what? This was just an extra computer in my bedroom that I could sit and type in at night. I didn’t need Excel or Word and all that on it. And whatever I’d put on it over the years wasn’t that important cause I’m not missing anything.

If I need to remember something and at the bedroom computer, I don’t need One Note. I just type it in an email TO MYSELF!

Pick it up on the kitchen laptap next day where I have my organizer program.

Point is, I suspect that lots of times we have computers only for the Internet. That computer in the bedroom was part of a network with the kitchen computer and they could “talk” to each other. I thought I was so cool you turned to ice stand next to me.

I didn’t need all that on the bedroom computer and now, any virus I get...boom, I’m wiping the hard drive on it.

To end, you should smile, husband buys me a hard drive backup thing and it’s great. I just backup drive C on both computers.

Only cost around $60 bucks, don’t need no intrusive virus protection system that always starts when I least want it...slowing stuff down.

I’ll just restore from this hard drive, backed up once a week cause this is no General Motors here, just a household that last week’s backup would do just fine.

Got Photobucket for my pics, got my Blog for my thoughts.

We sometimes make life more difficult than it need ought to be.

So we can be cool.

What if you just don’t turn your computer on this Monday. Will that prevent your computer from being affected?

I have Norton 360 protection. Will it protect me against this virus? Does anyone know?

If you are infected, you won’t be able to access the internet any time AFTER July 9.

It’s simple enough to check and make sure, while you can still fix it by reading the instructions off the internet.
