Despite Delays, Chair Lifts Coming To Public Pools
NPR ^ | July 6, 2012 | by Gigi Douban

Pools open to the public were supposed to have chair lifts installed for people with disabilities in time for this summer, but after a wave of protests, the federal order was delayed until January.

Still, some of the country's 300,000 or so pools at hotels, parks and gyms continue to fight the requirement.

Vestavia Hills pool near Birmingham, Ala., is one of thousands of pools that scrambled to get a chair lift installed by May.

At first glance, it looks like a lifeguard chair, only low to the ground. It's meant to help people with disabilities get in and out of the water.

"It goes really, really slow," says Candia Cole, Vestavia's pool supervisor."

May was the second installation deadline set by the U.S. Justice Department as part of a new provision of the Americans with Disabilities Act. But then many owners of the affected pools complained. Each chair lift costs as much as $8,000. And most hotel pools don't have lifeguards to operate them.

The elderly, people with arthritis or someone who is missing a limb could benefit from the chair lift, but Cole says so far no one's asked to use it.

"If it's used or not, you know, it's here, so we got it — ready to go," she says. "Come on down! The water's fine!"

No. I don't live in Oregon.

In northern Virginia, the "compact" designation is used to indicate spaces in parking structures that you DO NOT WANT to put your F150 in ... as it would be sticking out into the travel lane.

If one were to park a large vehicle in such a space, one would be most exceedingly rude, and at serious risk of having one's vehicle damaged.

I don't vote for liberals of either party.

Nor do I, but I have voted against Marxist's. a la giving my vote to McCain.

But, I will be very happy to see Republicans gaining seats in Congress

And Congress means exactly what to this traitorous POS with all of his tsars and EO's and alphabet agencies?

I voted for both Bushes and McCain. Been there, done that and tried that.

The Bush Presidencies were a disaster. Only a conservative President is going to turn this nation around.

If Obama tries any of that, he'll never weather the backlash. Democrats will even be throwing him under a bus because of the damage that will be done to the Democratic party.

Several winters ago my entire family came down with a terrible flu. My wife and I drove to the store for some items. It was sleeting outside and I parked in the furthest away handicap spot as my wife raced inside. It was nighttime around nine. There were three other spots open all of them closer to the door.

Driving there had been an ordeal and as my wife took longer than expected I worried about her. A woman with a large handicap placard hanging from her rearview mirror pulled up and parked in the handicap spot directly facing mine. She stared at me for a moment and then got out of her car. She waddled over to my window and peered in. She tried to get me to lower the window, but I was not going to worsen my chill. She then shouted that these spots were “handicap only”. I waved her off.

She lumbered into the store. From what I could tell her only handicap was her hefty girth. Not counting rudeness as a handicap. A few minutes later an employee came out to scold me. I explained that I had the flu as did my wife who was in the store. She wouldn’t hear anyting of it and demanded I move. I refused. The employee took down my plate and walked back to the store threatening to call the police. Please realize that even as the employee ranted at me there were still two additional handicap spots open and nearer the door than the one I was in.

Here I was sitting sick as a dog with my three young kids also sick. I had no handicap placard or doctor’s note, but at that moment in time we just wanted to go slink away. My wife, thankfully, returned shortly and we headed home to recover. It was at that moment that I realizeed just how PC our country had become. Despite explaining the predicament she wanted me to park nearly a block away. It was like the Gestapo and I was a Jew - this spot is not for you.

It’s far past time to end the victim class. Class warfare comes in many flavors, not just rich and poor.

How about a return to private property?

Right - you’re old enough to learn to follow the UCMJ in a war zone, be courtmartialed for violations and perhaps lose your life. but one touch of that demon rum and it’s all over for you.

Reagan wasn’t as great as people remember him. The good old days never were. Carter helped a lot and so did Volcker.

PS Don’t take any wooden nickles and look both ways when crossing.

What do you think he's been doing for the last 3 1/2 years?

EPA, DOMA, amnesty etc...

Where's the "backlash"?

Apparently, you missed the results of the 2010 elections.

I'm sure there will be a civil uprising if Obama tries to ship us off to concentration camps.
