Gee...I just saw him being interviewed on TV last week...didn’t seem the least bit old or sick....what an amazing guy. He had a huge smile.

RIP Mr. Borgnine. I somehow will always remember the Russian double-agent opposite Patrick McGoohan in "Ice Station Zebra". You had me guessing to the last moment.
That’s sad. I knew he was going to go one of these days, but even so...
A lot of people on FR are baby boomers who automatically associate Mr. Borgnine with McHale’s Navy, although younger folk like myself will mostly remember him because of Spongebob and his appearance on a Simpsons episode. That video of him explaining why he didn’t watch Brokeback Mountain was hilarious. “I didn’t care to see it because I’m more interested in seeing women than I am in men. I mean, I got nothing against men. But you know, to each his own.”
So, since people always die in threes, I wonder who’s next since him and Andy Griffith went.
I remember that! I also remember him as the gladiator trainor/manager? in “Demetrius and the Gladiators”, and the big, burly, friendly Roman soldier in “Jesus Of Nazareth” (tv miniseries-1977)!

When I was 17-18-19, THAT is what all Chiefs looked like.
A Navy Chief comes equipped with a frown, somewhat of a ‘pot’ belly, slouched hat and if a ‘working’ Chief - Engineman etc - he is allowed a little wrinkle to his Khakis.
I realize the Navy has some Chiefs today but they also have an ungodly # of E7/E8/E9.
Story about a Senior Chief that was treasurer of the Chief’s Mess and he (gasp) absconded some funds.
They were getting into the Courts Martial and ‘they’ kept referring to him as “E8 JONES” and finally his lawyer said
“They are prejudicing the Board with this constant calling Senior Chief Jones “E8 JONES” To which the President of the Court replied, “No sir! E8 JONES is fine, a Senior Chief in the United States Navy doesn’t steal from his shipmates”.
Yes, you’re right—that was the era of stars who were actually talented and worth running to see at the movies. They sure don’t make them like they used to. RIP to a true star.
I think he played the best Centurion of all actors who ever played the part.
He could not be type-cast. In 1955, he played a cocky SOB in “Bad day at black rock” and yet won the academy award for best actor in “Marty” as a aging and likable bachelor finding love.

He was one of the old breed who if they did have odd habits, they kept it quiet.
For whatever reason, Borgnine was in the sermon yesterday morning in a brief tie-in...had to do with a role he played as “Jonathon” an angel in a Little House on the Prairie episode called “The Lord is my Shepherd”.
Like all of Michael Landon’s shows, this was a heartwarmer, but this one moreso even than normal.
Borgnine was perfect in the role. RIP, Commander McHale; I hope the angel role is yours for keeps.
I remember a story Tim Conway told just a couple of years ago. There was a reunion for the McHale’s Navy cast, and nobody had seen Borgnine in a while. He showed up after everyone else had gotten there, and everyone was shocked when he had to be helped out of the car by the driver and was walking really slow with a pair of canes. About halfway to the rest of the group, he straightened up, threw away the canes and said “come on guys, you really gonna believe that?” Even in his early 90s, he was a joker...
I think I read somewhere that the Navy made Borgnine an honorary Chief.
