Yes, a good day, thanks! The temps now are quite a relief - only into the high 80's this afternoon - down in the 60's last night and tonight. That triple digit stuff is bad news for me - heat stroke in 'Nam - once you are a heat casualty you're predisposed to subsequent episodes.

Aloha Doc!

All's well over here and thanks for the best news I've heard today. Wishing you wellness and also wishing you'll still take it easy for a change.

Home safe and sound....it’s a bit strange not having to get started on homework. Last night was heavy duty, as was today at work...but, I got all my corrections made, and checks are done.

Our security branch is starting several new projects and hiring LOTS of new folks. It’s a nightmare. With so many new faces, payable at different rates, attending 2 different kinds of training, paid at different rates, and then not finding them in the system, means I really have to concentrate on what I am doing. I have to do a lot of calculator work as not all pay rates are yet connected to project #s. I have to do the math....rate times hours and then put in MY totals rather than use the system totals.

Not apropos of anything, but I had a nice memory yesterday. When I was 13 years old, between 8th grade and Freshman year of high school, my family summered in Wildwood, N.J. We rented a floor of a huge beach house owned by a friend of the family. My parents were there for about two weeks - they switched off with our aunts and uncles. We kids were there the entire summer.

A couple of weeks in, my cousin, John Dowd and I started selling newspapers on the the Beach. We would get up before 5:00 a.m. and go to meet a young man named Irving Zaslo at the Boardwalk where he would dispense the papers to us from the back of an aging station wagon.

New York Times, Herald Trib, Post, Daily News, Mirror - Newark Star Ledger - Phila Inquirer and Bulletin - Baltimore Sun and Washington Post. We'd head out at about 7:00 with a sackful of 40 or 50 pounds of newspaper and stroll up and down the beach for several hours until we were sold out. We sang out the names of our papers and people would buy them. I forget how much we charged for most of them - it was 15 cents for a Daily News or Mirror. I remember one guy complaining that the Daily News was a rag-eater for a nickel.

We were usually done before noon and the heat of the day. At about that time the ice cream guys would start. They were impressive - carried a mini freezer on their shoulder.

This was how we earned our spending money for that trip. This was 1961 - over a half-century ago. One of many early adventures I had with my cousin John. Haven't seen John in about 10 or 15 years. He served in the Coast Guard during 'Nam. He's now retired as a Paramedic with the FD down in Hampton, VA. He retired as a Lt. and is now working more as a consultant and teacher with them than he was before his retirement. A great guy - I need to talk to him before the next family funeral - tired of seeing my cousins only at funerals and weddings.

Luckily, we never lost our power - I would have been in a cooling center, ER or a Motel room. :)

What a wonderful memory...and good initiative for 13 year olds.

Sounds like fun shared.

So glad you never lost power. Do you have a generator?

If I had the funds I would have a whole house one that kicks in automatically when the power goes off. And goes off when the power comes back on. No muss, no fuss!

Aloha again Night Owl! ((HUGS))

Sorry for the double post....all I could see was a little circle spinning round and round so I hit it again. My PC was 'stuck on stupid'....or one of us was.

Sun, yes; meeting with son, yes but other than that good news is a rare commodity lately.

Friday's a special day.....

We had a good time as 18 year olds, too. I was legal to buy beer and wine in D.C. I used to drive down Georgia Avenue near Walter Reed to the Cork and Bottle, load up the trunk of my '65 VW Bug with beer and head up the road to Annapolis. John's dad, my Uncle Jack Dowd, was then Superintendent of the Annapolis National Cemetery. We would go over to the Naval Academy at nightfall - we were granted entry by virtue of our military ID cards - and set up under the footbridge that crossed College Creek. There we would drink beer and stick our net into the water to snag blue crabs - returning to the Lodge at the Cemetery in the early hours of the morning, we would importune my Aunt Virginia (one of the most elegant ladies it has ever been my honor to know) to steam the crabs and we would have a morning crab feast. Good times, good people. Would that I could pass a word with them now!

Must retire – the 0500 Reveille approaches relentlessly.

The computers at work were extra slow all day, and I’m experiencing the spinning circle here at home, too.

Son all over the yuckies?

Come on Friday!!
