President Barack Obama's reelection campaign mocked Mitt Romney late Wednesday as being "scared" of Venezuela's anti-American President Hugo Chavez "like he's ten feet tall," the latest rhetorical broadside in an escalating war of words.
"Hugo Chavez has become increasingly marginalized and his influence has waned," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said in a statement. "It's baffling that Mitt Romney is so scared of a leader like Chavez whose power is fading, while Romney continues to remain silent about how to confront al-Qaeda or how to bring our troops home from Afghanistan."
The rhetorical rumble began late Tuesday when Obama told a Florida television interviewer that Chavez "has not had a serious national security impact on us." Romney promptly led a chorus of angry Republican charges that Obama had failed to confront the alleged threat posed by the Venezuelan leader as part of a "pattern of weakness" in foreign policy.
"People like Hugo Chavez want attention and that's exactly what Mitt Romney and his supporters gave him today. Governor Romney is only playing into the hands of Chavez by acting like he's ten feet tall," LaBolt said in a sharply personal and mocking counter.

this morning, the obamites called romney a liar. this afternoon he’s a coward.
this is going to be 1828 all over again. next, they will be calling ann romney a whore.
Yeah, that's right! Obama knows how to do those things: Support the Muslim Brotherhood everywhere with everything you've got.
Kinda reminds you of the “whimp” smear against George H W Bush.
Hugo is nothing but a joke.
Lets see, they are best buddies with our worst enemies and they are starting to build a missile launching facility for launching satellites.
An EMP over Chicago would only cause the death of 250,000,000 Americans by starvation and disease.
Nope, nothing to fear here.
Lets see, Iran is building on the northernmost island of Venezuela a long range missile launching facility that can hit the USA.
Wasn’t there an issue in the early 60’s about missiles that could hit the USA? But that was with a President who actually feared Cuba.
I am beginning to believe the Obama campaign does not intend to win in November. Their positions are completely idiotic.
As opposed to the Obama camp...who embraces anybody sharing their goal of the destruction of America.
As if anyone out there is scared of the Obamadork.
Or as if anyone out there believes the Obamadork.
So if they call Romney a homophobe does that mean he is afraid of Obama? The left mistakes reason for fear. That’s because they lack the former and thrive on the latter.
this strategy will backfire on the BHO Team.
Romney will succefully demonstrate that this is the same attitude BHO took with Iran, Syria, etc...
It is as if Lawrence O’Donnell has taken over the Obama Campaign.
Osama Obama's problem is that Romney finds photos like this to be nauseating...as do the overwhelming majority of Americans.
Is that Hugo Chavez or Jose Baez??
A nuclear weapon would have to be in the multi-megaton range to do any significant EMP damage.
And if Venezuela ever tried something like that, we would wipe them off the map.
Team Obama is scared of Mitt Romney, like he was 10ft tall.
That photo scares me.
Cancer once again fails to cure Venezuela of its “President for Life”
Obama is scared of Sarah Palin
Barack has pledged to not use a nuclear response if we are attacked.
I would rather we view a potential enemy as a possible or real threat rather than bowing to, supporting, financing or otherwise encouraging and kissing the collective asses of known and real threats.
It’s a safe bet that the vast majority of Obama’s supporters are either ignorant or supportive of Chavez and Ahmadinejad’s alliance, Iran’s nuclear aspirations, the Cuban missile crisis, or just plain lack the intellect to see the farce of history attempting to repeat itself.
First thing a new president should do for our troops is give them new rules of engagement that allow them to shoot first and not have to worry about non-combatant casualties.
If the non-combatants know that they can be shot, they’ll see to it that they leave beforehand.
Every war up WW2 gave the troops the ability to wage war without legal problems from lawyers and liberals back home.
