One in ten Florida adults -- and nearly one in four African Americans – cannot vote because of a felony conviction, by far the highest rate in the nation, a report released on Thursday indicated.
The report by The Sentencing Project, an advocate for voting rights, found that more than 1.5 million felons were disenfranchised in Florida in 2010, including 1.3 million who were longer behind bars.
Florida, a big swing state known for close elections and snafus at the polls, sends an extraordinary number of its residents to prison and has imposed some of the nation's toughest requirements for restoring voting rights. Most states restore voting rights automatically once a felon leaves prison.

It excludes them until the requirements are met at which time they can apply to have their voting rights restored.
I know several convicted felons in NY and their rights were restored at the time of their release, I think; regardless, voting rights can be restored.
The felon has to take the initiative and actively pursue the process.
Maybe we should just wipe their cans for them on this issue, too.

Once upon a time across this nation in many states, felons and ex-felons were NOT allowed to vote - some ever again.
Yay, Florida!
And due to our tax advantages and lenient bankruptcy laws regarding homestead exemptions, we have a fairly large number of felons (pre and post conviction) from other states who move here for various reasons.
We can legally exclude felons from voting, so we do.
There is an onerous legal process for felons to regain full voting rights, and that is rarely granted, for good and logical reasons.
An extraordinary number of our legal residents, are not Floridians.
We also have voter ID laws.
I believe they can apply to get their voting rights back. Takes some effort, but what’s the problem with that? I doubt most of these guys care about voting - it’s just one more way they can feel sorry for themselves. Rather than realizing they create their own problems by how they act.
It’s like the photo ID thing. If a person’s too lazy to get a photo ID - they’re probably too stupid to vote.

Once a person serves his or her time, ALL rights should be restored, including the right to own firearms.
Prison is the punishment and it should be the only punishment, unless the death penalty was earned.
A person released from prison, and not on parole, has served their debt to society, period.
measure all things by their effect on society. I signed someone elses name on a $20.00 check in 1958 when I was 18 years old...tried and convicted for forgery (felony) 3 years probation....is it O.K. with you if I vote now??
my first national vote after that was for Kennedy in 1960 and I have never missed a national or local election since. I have been honest all my life, owned several very successful businesses, paid a HUGE amoung in taxes and frankly, I don't think my conviction means a damned thing. I even worked in the Indiana department of corrections and they know of my conviction....
No, but since I am a long time actual Florida resident, it doesn’t surprise me.
I’m trying to come up with a way for Florida to legally deny former California citizens from claiming Florida residence and voting rights for at least five years after they move here....

You are still a felon...regardless if you have voting rights restored. There is no such thing as an ex felon.
