Early voting just began this week for the upcoming primary, but some metro counties are already seeing a surge of early voters. In Henry County, elections officials say they are seeing up to 500 voters a day and are now expecting a 45-50 percent turnout for the primary.
Turnout has been similar in DeKalb County.
"We are already seeing more people coming out than in 2008's primary... we've already voted more people in three days than we voted in the first five weeks of 2008," says the county's elections supervisor Maxine Daniels.
She says the presidential race, the transportation sales tax referendum, as well as numerous local races may be having an affect on early voting.
Numbers of early voters have also been higher in Cobb and Gwinnett Counties.
WSB's Sandra Parrish found many voters at DeKalb's elections headquarters who will be out of town during the July 31 primary and wanted to make sure their votes counted on the TSPLOST referendum.
"I've lived in cities like New York and Boston where they have strong transportation systems, so I've always been a strong supporter of it and that's why I came out early," says Frank Casper.
Richard Couture also came out early, but to oppose the tax. He doesn't think the project list has enough transit for him to support it.
"I would vote for SPLOST if it were for transit rather than road building," he says.
Early voting this year only runs for 21 days, less than half the time in previous elections. Daniels thinks that could also be one reason why turnout is higher.]
How many interviews did they have to sort through before they could cherry pick these two.
How about I'm against the tax because raising taxes in a recession is the dumbest thing you can do. OR I'm against it because why should I subsidize transit when I don't use it - raise the fares OR It IS NOT A PENNY TAX. It's a six BILLION dollar tax OR They already admit that $6,000,000,000 is just a first step. How much of our money will it take to satisfy these greedy bastards? OR how about all of the corporte heads who are all for it like AT&T and Southern Company putting their employees on flex hours of 4 ten hour days a week and cutting the peak highway loading down that way, etc.

I will vote no, as we already have a road tax built into the price of gasoline, but I didn’t even know there was early voting for this.
Fer sher. Atlanta Chamber of Commerce has spent SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS in advertising to try and ram this tax down our throats. They expect a thousand fold payoff in getting their greedy hands on taxpayer money. It's $6,000,000,000 of taxpayer plunder to enrich some individuals and corporations in just the metro area alone if this measure passes
This "penny tax" will cost the average metro area family (approx 1.4 million families.) 6,000,000,000/1,400,000 or $4285 each over 10 years.
There has been a very intense and very one sided corporate campaign in favor of this around the Atlanta area. Lot's of big shot corporate types trying to get their employees to vote for it, and who knows may of the employees may be dumb enoug to do just that.
I am in Savannah. It is pretty quiet here, although I have seen a few commercials.
That's a used car, which with care will last that long. I'll need a replacement beater soon, and expect to spend about that much - and, should TSPLOST pass, I may not be able to.
Or...maybe that's the point: take away people's replacement-car money, and they'll HAVE to use MARTA (whether they live/work anywhere near pickup/dropoff is ignored).
Recurring un-discussed theme of taxation: when taxes are raised, what will taxpayers have to give up? Raise sales tax a penny for limited transportation, and make millions beholden to that mode of transportation - denying them the practical freedom to choose other options. I can't choose to drive if you take away my money needed to buy a car.

You've probably read Bastiat's What is seen and what is not seen but in case you haven't it's a really great little essay on exactly that problem. If we could get all of the dumbass voters who are in favor of this stupidity to read it, those with a few functioning brain cells (NOT 0bama supporters) might change their minds about supporting it.

I'm saying no and you're saying no, but there are a lot of idiots saying yes. (like the one from NY in the article.) It has long been my contention that New Yorkers befoul everyting they touch, but that's a discussion for another thread:-)
Too true. Isn't it funny how those who want to keep what THEY EARNED are called greedy by the politicians, but the politicians who want to take what YOU and I earned are never considered "greedy." by the media?

Even if they spent it "wisely" They couldn't spend it as wisely as you could yourself. This is just another example of the economic "central planning" that was such a disasterous failure in the Soviet Union and remains a disaster in Cuba today. The central planning bureaucrats see something that they want either because they genuinely think it would bring a benefit (I know, ha ha) or they see a way to benefit themselves out of it.

I was just explaining to my favorite Leftist how (per his baseline example) a Wall Street lawyer making a half-million might very well react to the Obama’s “repeal Bush tax cuts for the rich” plan: faced with a tax hike equaling a week’s pay, thus faced with losing a week of vacation just to keep the same net income, he may instead opt to take another week of unpaid vacation - dropping the extra tax revenue some 40% from what’s expected & advertised now.
Raise taxes, and people WILL change their behavior. Don’t be so sure about what revenue that increase will produce.
Problem with a sales tax is that it is difficult to change behavior to avoid it. We all buy things. I buy on-line where it makes sense to do so, but there is a limit to this. The backstabbers in the legislature already approved a plan to tax internet sales and our RINO gov signed it into law.
I don't follow your math. Let's assume the guy works 200 days and is getting hit with a 40% incremental rate. To simplify calculations let's also assume that dropping a week (unpaid) will still leave him in the 40% bracket. So by my calculations the government is losing (5days/200days)*(40%) or tax revenue of 1% of this guy's income if he's making taxable income of 1/2 million they're losing $5000. What am I missing in your example?
