The city of Santa Cruz, usually at the forefront of environmental causes, became the latest, but probably not the last, local government to ban single-use plastic bags, with the 6-0 vote by the City Council Tuesday night. Santa Cruz banned foam products as well.
Santa Cruz's new law on foam products, for instance, will outlaw foam coolers, toys, shipping containers and packing peanuts. The city of Capitola also bans foam ice chests and coolers, and the county bans foam food containers.
The 48 and counting plastic bag and foam bans of some type in California offer a patchwork of regulations, with differing standards.
So, yes, by all means remember to take your cloth bags into the grocery store. It doesn't take long to change habits.
But don't worry if you're confused about what's banned and where, because it is confusing.
The environmental hazards of single use plastic bags and foam products are well documented. The state should step in and set the standards for all of California.

Seriously, just look around and imagine if all plastics would be banned. Almost everything has plastics in it from clothing, to appliances, to cars — which is where they are trying to go.
Then they will complain that we are depleating natural resources. I think liberals want to get rid of all humans and leave the planet “natural”.
In some areas, they’re starting to charge money for paper bags. The fee is $.10 or $.25—seemingly insignificant—but like bridge tolls, they will be going up, and up, and up!
Well, we went to plastic to “save the planet”...here in Maine we have a tree every square foot unless you clear out an area.
I propose something more durable than plastic...like iron...

California must not be having a fiscal crisis. They can afford hiring more folks to police this nonsense. It is great to have an economy supported by burger flippers and plastic bag enforcers. The ultimate in Obamanomics.
Let’s just cut to the end and ban ALL PACKAGING. Bring your own rinsed-out bottles to the store to get more orange juice, milk, V-8 Juice, tomato soup, Hawaiian Punch, Head & Shoulders shampoo, Lysol and Drano. Bring your own old newspaper to wrap the steaks, sliced turkey, fresh fish and charcoal briquets. Don’t be selfish and think of your own safety and convenience...think of how you would be saving the planet.

They might as well forget refrigerated meat lockers and grocery stores too. Just turn the streets into 'open air' markets where people put their bloody meat into their own containers.

Pasadena, here in southern California, is a plastic-bag (at the grocery stores)-free zone. However, the cities surrounding it are all Free Territories. The powers that be put the ban in; the other towns must vote on it, and that is not in the works. I suspect that I am not the only one who heads to one of the other markets and avoids the Pasadena stores.
Not only that, if I shop IN Pasadena, I bring my own (recycled) plastic bags. In fact, a person could SELL those outside the Pasadena stores and make a few bucks. Or on E-Bay.
Stupid Nanny State regs. Stupid stupid California lawmakers.
Once they ban plastic bags and paper bags in California they will need something to replace them...

You mean, those societies where infectious diseases spread like wildfire, and where people live in filth?
If you go to some of these naturally beautiful places and look at the sorts of people that inhabit them, you can see where that idea might come to mind. When they look at themselves and their fellow useless crazies, wiping themselves off the planet seems rational.
Yes, those societies whose eco-friendly policies are also solving the dilemma of the 'overpopulation' of the planet.
Just think how in shape the populace will be with iron bags. All that lifting. Jackpot.
I bet each of those six council members will still be using plastic bags and feel justified in doing so. Laws like this are there to restrain the impetuous and uneducated proles; they are not for the enlightened ruling class.

I find these ordinances offensive beyond belief. People have to realize they have nothing to do with the environment.
1. The bag ban shuts down manufacturing of paper bags in the US and kills jobs here.
2. The bag ban encourages a money shift to china and other overseas manufacturing bases because the bags are manufactured overseas
3. The most offensive is that the bans allow the government to create a taxing body out of private businesses, where the government decides the tax rate, and NO VOTE BY THE CITIZEN is given to create or approve the taxes. Most counties have ordinances that require votes by citizens to raise taxes, this ordinance is a sleazy end run around that.
4. The store owner now becomes complicit in the corruption, as they keep the money collected, tax free. No, it does not go to pay for the ‘environment’ in any way shape or form.
5. Another extremely troubling and offensive part of the ban in Santa Cruz county is that it makes the public works department in to the law enforcement department for this ordinance. In essence, it creates a political police with the authority to fine or otherwise penalize you because of a political agenda— such a soviet concept! This keeps the public works department from its chartered responsibilities, so the council members can use the annual road budget to pad their pensions and create useless money stealing committees and programs to pay off their political supporters.
6. The law flouts equal justice as well, granting exemptions to protected political classes, leaving the average citizen holding the bag so to speak to pay for it all.
Once the owners start collecting the free money and they are assured that the rates will increase annually, they complete the corrupt agenda of this plan, as they will now support the sleazy council members who are providing them this free money. Now the government is legislating graft as a city or county ordinance.
Kills jobs, sends money to China, corrupts constitutional government, deprives citizens the right to representation on tax matters, favors and creates political cronies, the list goes on and on.
No wonder the local governments are passing these ordinances like wildfire. More money and power to them, secures a political base and the hapless citizen has to pay for it all.
