Democrats threaten to go over ‘fiscal cliff’ if GOP fails to raise taxes
Washington Post ^

Democrats are making increasingly explicit threats about their willingness to let nearly $600 billion worth of tax hikes and spending cuts take effect in January unless Republicans drop their opposition to higher taxes for the nation’s wealthiest households.

Emboldened by signs that GOP resistance to new taxes may be weakening, senior Democrats say they are prepared to weather a fiscal event that could plunge the nation back into recession if the new year arrives without an acceptable compromise.

In a speech Monday, Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.), the Senate’s No. 4 Democrat and the leader of the caucus’s campaign arm, plans to make the clearest case yet for going over what some have called the “fiscal cliff.”

“If we can’t get a good deal, a balanced deal that calls on the wealthy to pay their fair share, then I will absolutely continue this debate into 2013,” Murray plans to say, according to excerpts of the speech provided to The Washington Post.

If the tax cuts from the George W. Bush era expire and taxes go up for everyone, the debate will be reset, Murray is expected to say. “Every proposal will be a tax-cut proposal,” according to the excerpts, and Republicans would no longer be “boxed in” by their pledge not to raise taxes.

“If middle-class families start seeing more money coming out of their paychecks next year, are Republicans really going to stand up and fight for new tax cuts for the rich? Are they going to continue opposing the Democrats’ middle-class tax cut once the slate has been wiped clean? I think they know this would be an untenable political position.”

Murray’s address, set to be delivered at the Brookings Institution, is meant to influence both the Nov. 6 election and the lame-duck legislative session in November and December

Guess what, part of the regulations you’re talking about driving up the cost is that every state is not a right to work state.

Everything from the raw material to end product is done by union labor, and the regulations will not allow you to change that.

as we all thought, another political wedge, the Dem goal is to raise taxes.

Wrong. The Dem goal is communism.

They started with liberalism, they are presently on socialism, but the goal is communism.

The conductor knew the bridge was out, and polled the passengers about putting on the brakes. The passengers let him know that if he put on the brakes, it would make them uncomfortable, and they would vote him out of his conductor job,

so he is just letting it go.

I guess it is time to pick on the 47 percent that pay no income taxes.

Strike a deal, everyone pays, then maybe we can consider the issue of fair share. NOT! Fair as a conversation piece went out for most of us when we were sixteen years old.

That’s the problem with conservatives - we’re stuck having to prove a negative.

The left had a long-range plan to get us to this point - all the while playing to the baser instincts - envy, covetousness, sloth, etc.

We need a similar plan than plays to virtue - and rewards it.

(I know we already have one, but we need to “advertise” it more, and counter the claims of our adversaries)

What are the odds that the Republicans will cave?

Approximately 117 percent.

At this rate, we’re going off a “fiscal cliff” no matter what.

It's gonna to happen whoever's in charge...

Republicans need to stand up for principles and call the Democrat’s bluff. Democrats count on Republicans being weak.

Exactly, CALL THEIR BLUFF !!

“Well, I’ve got nothing better to do. Lets go see him together.”

If the ‘Pubbies sign on to this, they had the Democrats a pallet of ammo. Close down the government first.

She won't define "fair share;" what Democrat will?

They had their opportunity in 2010 when they still controlled the House and Senate and the rates were set to expire. Sorry, missy, but these are the Bush-Obama tax rates.

Their @#&% demagogic plan will do NOTHING to get people working again.

Getting people back to work will increase revenues far better than raising rates on some arbitrary 'class' of tax payer.

What's the matter with these damnable people?

Eliminate those U.S.Departments of the Federal Government not explicitly described as powers granted to the Feds in the U.S.Constitution

bump, nudge, shove. Wouldn’t necessarily help the unemployment figures, but sure would cut some spending.

"Democrats threaten to go over ‘fiscal cliff’ if GOP fails to raise taxes."

Sounds like a win-win proposition to me. To them, the fiscal cliff is to NOT raise taxes.

One of the simpler answers to such a campaign by the Dems, is, “if we are going to severly punish people who succeed, do we really have an American dream?”

No, the correct answer is:

The top 2% are already paying over 50% of all federal individual income taxes. How much more is their "fair share"?

An AGI of 200K single/250K married puts you right at the 98th percentile, or the top 2%. They actually paid 50.92% in 2009. It was as high as 53.75% in 2007.
