A teaching associate at a private school in Iowa has reportedly been fired for allegedly telling students that “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is a “racist” novel.

Naiya Galloway, 31, was fired by Hillcrest Family Services, a privately run K-12 school that caters to students who have mental health issues or behavioral problems, The Des Moines Register reports.

Galloway has denied allegations that she questioned the school’s use of the book, but acknowledged she disrupted a classroom discussion of the Ku Klux Klan because it had triggered “flashbacks,” noting that she’s both black and Japanese, the newspaper reports.

What type of flashbacks? She is only 31! Maybe flashbacks of history being changed to make her happy?

What type of TEACHER does not know that Huck Finn is anything BUT racist- that the entire story line is about helping an escaped negro slave

Has she never actually read it?

People under 60 in this country have never witnessed racism and don’t know what they are talking about if they think they have.

She can't be fired for "flashbacks."

That’s okay, I flunked an 11th grade essay for saying Huckleberry Finn was NOT racist.

I had an angry black liberal teacher...she wanted us to right a report describing how racist and offensive the book is. I presented a counterpoint just for fun. I knew I was going to fail.

When I was a teacher I thought my opinions on things were immaterial. And I taught some things that could get a little dicy. But the Texas did not employ me to give my opinion but to teach the material.

“People under 60 in this country have never witnessed racism and don’t know what they are talking about if they think they have.”

Affirmative Action, in a different manifestation, is every bit as destructively racist as anything this country has ever experienced.

My question exactly. At her age she’s been pretty much indulged and able to write her own ticket based on her, apparently, many minorities. “Flashbacks”. Yeah, right.

A student should never fail for an opinion, only for the ability to present their view and for their writing (grammar etc if applicable). I hate when teachers do that. Turns so many kids off of literature, English and such.

This teachers aid wasn’t fired for calling Huck Finn racist, she was fired for being illiterate.

The key word here is “Private School”. Teachers in private schools are actually held accountable for what they teach.

Actually, Donald, at age 49 I can truthfully say I have witnessed it, having been discriminated against by blacks and hispanics in various civilian jobs. The hate-whitey race card is alive and thriving.

it had triggered “flashbacks,” noting that she’s both black and Japanese, the newspaper reports.

She must have been recalling how she was lynched and beaten...no wait...maybe she recalls reading about it and it upset her...no wait...maybe she got caught with her stupidity showing.

She looks like she’s having a flashback to her last triple order of Double Quarter Pounders with Super-Size-Me Fries (and a Diet Coke).

She probably has never read Huckleberry Finn, but was told by somebody that it was racist. That’s the way people grow up in this society today. They overlook one of the great works in American literature because one word in it offends them. I’m sure Twain wouldn’t mind if you edited the offensive word out. In fact, he’d probably be amused by the addition of “African-American”.

Maybe she had “flashbacks” to when she watched “Roots” on tv.

There isn't a single black person in America under the age of 50 who has ever experienced an overt act of racism on the order of something from the Klan-- ever!
