IED’s are not a problem ... simply kill every man , woman and child within a mile of the IED blast and after a VERY short while they will not tolerate anyone planting the bombs.
The Russians tried a very similar strategy with proven negative results. This is a tribal society. They will fight to the last by any means available.

How about the opposite tack? Pay them to protect a stretch of road. No IED - food, water, electricity and money are yours.
Actually, since it’s a Palantir, send in the Nazgul. And have them bring along a few thousand Orcs, Wargs and Urukhai.
Since this seems to be the Major Killer of our Military, they should stop at nothing to protect our Military on the battlefield.

I get your point, but that is a ton of collateratal damage
Took a long time for them to stop using hummers in Iraq, and fortifying the guys on the top with that really big gun. (no I don’t know what it’s called or the caliber... :) I
Take a trip to Walter Reed, then come back and tell us about collateral damage again.
