grade school-aged children are increasingly appearing as plaintiffs in lawsuits involving global warming.
In one Oregon case, an 11 year old filed a lawsuit against the State of Oregon and Gov. John Kitzhaber claiming failure to protect the public trust and to protect the states natural resources from the impacts of climate change.
But before you cheer on the legal chutzpah of these youngsters, note that there are various nonprofit organizations who are largely behind these cases. In fact, these organizations have supported similar cases in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
Mary Christina Wood, a professor at the Oregon University of Law who is credited with creating the legal framework of these suits, was quoted as saying: having young people as plaintiffs in the cases gives added moral authority. We should be getting youths in front of the courts, not polar bears.
To me, it does not seem totally ethical to be using 11 year olds to sue the government. I also find it remarkable and quite arrogant to think that there are those who believe that judicial activism can somehow change the worlds climate. (I would also love to hear the argument that a colder world is better than a warmer world.)

Wouldn’t do this in a loser pays state!
I’m still trying to figure out exactly what kind of “remedy” these plaintiffs are expecting to get out of this. LOL.
When can kids sue for the debt this president is sticking to them?
We need judges who will pull the parents aside and ask them if the child is out of control and some state intervention might be necessary.
I have seen judges strip parental rights from a parent using the child as an emotional or legal weapon.
Wouldnt do this in a loser pays state!”
It wouldn’t surprise me if this little twerp wins but more importantly this whole issue should never have gotten this far.
It is child abuse and proceedings should be brought against their parents.
Agreed.
Also agreed.
When all else fails...bring out the children.
Dem tactics. Dem parents no doubt. Took a while for them to
come up with this.
parents should be hit with all the costs of the court and legals after it’s thrown out.
A completely foreseeable and logical continuation of that liberal cry, “It’s for the Children!” Same emotive effect as using the baby seal in the anti-fur campaign, a heart-string symphony with no need for those inconvenient facts.
Taken to its “reducto ad absurdum” extreme, it requires total human extermination to restore the “balance of nature”. Of course, natural balance, like global temperature and other liberal sibboliths is a complete chimera in the ever changing dynamism of natural processes. This, however, is anathema for these movement fanatics and thus children are the current ammunition for these Luddites, utterly convinced of their personal rectitude and causes.
Meanwhile, numerous law firms and bureaucrats dance their money and ideaology dance, uncaring that their end results leaves a ham-strung society and nation, making Reagan’s “Last best hope” a hopeless regulated nightmare.
“lawsuits by children lends moral authority...”
What moral authority is the basis for their moral authority?
Just asking.
If a kiddie is the plaintiff, who's the defendant.
Who existed first, the Plaintiff's defendant? or the defendant? It sounds like fraud, to me.
Shouldn't a minor's attorney be court appointed? Which court appointed this one?
Isn't a self-appointed attorney usually called an ambulance chaser?
Mary Christina Wood, a professor at the Oregon University of Law who is credited with creating the legal framework of these suits...
I am intrigued at the lack of information. How did this exploiter of our laws accomplish this? That must be a historic judicial milestone. Lame but interesting. This also covers lawyers who sue on behalf of rocks and worms. No different.
NO!
I would have NEVER suspected that!
Child abuse!
