The consequences of the city’s fiscal crisis took a trashy turn during a hearing Monday night when San Bernardino officials noted garbage pick-up was among the obligations they might not be able to afford after turning their government into a cash-only operation.
The City Council voted Monday to delay the vote until Wednesday to avoid mediation and head straight to federal bankruptcy. The council previously had voted to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection, but Monday night members expressed a desire for more time to look over financial information and talk to constituents.
CBS2 reporter Jeff Nguyen reports the City of San Bernardino can no longer pay for anything on credit, such as gasoline for its fleet of garbage pick-up trucks. As a result, taxpayers may be left holding the bag for taking away their trash promptly as early as Wednesday

That place will stink for years. I would deliver the trash to city hall at night.
Used to live in a union-infested city and more a couple of times, the garbage union went on strike and they were the only game in the city. However, every time these clowns went on strike every 3 years, people would drive up to their gates and throw their trash there. It gets bad on the 2nd week when they replace security guys with cops.
There are plenty of private companies who will pick up your trash for a reasonable fee.
Many cities force you to use the one chosen by the city board of supervisors. You get no choice.
As they should be.
The elected criminals probably didn't think to make a priority list. The following are the top three; nothing else matters as much because we can do it ourselves :
Sewer treatment
Working Water Supply.
Garbage pickup.
The next set is almost as important : Street lights.
Traffic lights.
Police presence; vetted volunteers, if necessary.
Citizen stand your ground ordinance.
Well, you get the idea.
The cut expenses list will ALWAYS be manipulated; don't fall into the trap of allowing the vested interests make the "to go" priority list. Demand that they resign and be replaced first.
At my property in TN one can sign up for trash pickup by paying a small fee. Last I heard it was under $100/year. Or, the property owner can cart off their trash at a convenience station. Convenience stations are open six days per week. I use the convenience stations. Toss a bag or two of trash in the vehicle and dump it in the dumpsters at the convenience station. BTW, property taxes are low.
It looks like trash collection is a city monopoly. I like the suggestion to toss your trash (minus identifying items, like junk mail addressed to you) onto the city hall lawn.
Back when I was young most houses had concrete incinerators in the backyard for trash.
Same here. Back in the 1950s and early 1960s, every weekend in San Francisco you would see plumes of smoke across the city as people incinerated waste in 55-gallon steel drums in their backyards. It cut down on a lot of waste, but fouled the air so it was banned in the mid-60s.
As they should be. That is why we pay taxes. Only under Obama we have learned that we pay for salaries and health care of public workers. To hell with the roads and health of the tax paying (slaves) civilians.
I’m old enough to remember home incinerator units. Several of our neighbors had natural gas powered ones.

Before I could sell the house, the bureaucrats made me hire a “certified contractor” to remove it.

When we moved into a city several years ago we were given a list of trash pick-up companies as part of our house closing documents. You had to have pick up at least once a week but you could have it more often if you wanted to spend more. Never understood why all cities don’t do this.
They also handled snow removal the same way. Streets were cleared by the city but, for an additional cost out of your pocket, they would also clear the driveway and sidewalks.

I want to know how come no one stood up and asked this "City Official" what priorities were used to determine who gets paid with these limited funds? I assume the "Official" is still receiving a paycheck? WHY?
Why does the public have to take it in the shorts when money gets tight? When the local city gov't doesn't get what they want, they always make cuts where it hurts the common folk most (garbage collection, potholes, lines at the DMV, etc.) The purpose, of course, is to intimidate the public and force them to acceed to the city's demands.
If I were a resident of that city, I would demand that NO city administrator be paid until the city's obligations were met.
Public servants, right?
