HAZEL PARK — A Hazel Park man fired a gunshot at a would-be car thief, police say, after the fleeing man raised him arm as though he were going to fire a gun.

“The suspect was jumping over a privacy fence when the resident saw the suspect’s arm come up,” said Hazel Park Police Lt. Brain Buchholz. “The resident thought the other man was pointing a gun at him and then fired his own gun.”

The resident told police he heard the man hit the ground on the other side of the fence in the 300 block of East Evelyn before he went home and police were called about 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Police said no one was hit by the gunfire, but officers found a revolver near the fence they believe the would-be car thief was carrying. Police later learned the revolver was stolen in Indiana more than 30 years ago.

“It’s possible the suspect was trying to fire the gun but it wouldn’t fire because it is so old,” Buchholz said.

Though police set up a perimeter around the area, the would-be car thief escaped. Police found a flashlight and screwdriver near an SUV that the unknown man had entered.

Police also confiscated the resident’s gun and said they are investigating the shooting.

“At this point we don’t expect to bring charges against the resident, whose gun is registered to him,” Buchholz said.

The resident told police he first spotted the culprit after his dog barked and he looked outside to see the other man in his next-door neighbor’s Buick in the 300 block of East Evelyn.

The resident went outside and confronted the man, who fled on foot. Police said the resident retrieved a gun from his house and went looking for the other man. The resident found him farther down the street inside a Jeep Cherokee, police said.

The resident had his gun drawn and the other man jumped out of the vehicle, police said.

The other man refused to lie on the ground when the resident ordered him to and kept reaching for something in his pocket, police said.

“The suspect pled with the resident not to shoot him then took off running through an open yard until he came to the privacy fence,” Buchholz said.

The would-be thief landed in the backyard of a house in the 300 of East Maxlow after he got over the privacy fence and ran away, police said.

Do not get into a conversation with the criminal. The lie. They will say anything to get what they want.

Not sure what to think but if you scare the perp enough for him to drop his gun I suppose its a good shoot.

Why do they always do this?

What happens when the perp comes back for revenge?

Yeah! In such a case the cops should at least provide a loaner.

How could he shoot at those men?
Why, I’ll bet that they both looked just like Obama’s sons... if he had sons...
