Drought wilts crops as officials pray for rain

Oppressive heat and a worsening drought in the U.S. Midwest pushed grain prices near or past records on Monday as crops wilted, cities baked and concerns grew about food and fuel price inflation in the world's top food exporter.

Soybean prices at the Chicago Board of Trade set a record high and corn closed near a record as millions of acres of crops seared in triple-digit heat in the Corn Belt. Corn fields have been plowed up in many locations for lack of rain. Now soybeans, which develop later than corn, are in the bull's eye.

"I get on my knees everyday and I'm saying an extra prayer right now," U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told reporters after briefing President Barack Obama. "If I had a rain prayer or a rain dance I could do, I would do it." …

Drought conditions now extend over more than 60 percent of the lower 48 states, the government said. The Department of Agriculture on Wednesday extended drought aid to an additional 39 counties designated as primary natural disaster areas, bringing such aid to a total of 1,297 counties across 29 states. …

Too late for the corn even if it does rain. And it looks like the soybeans will be wiped out, too.

"I get on my knees everyday and I'm saying an extra prayer right now," U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

Vilsack is an extreme fringe leftist. This is the evil scum that gave Iowa felons the "right" to vote back in 2005. He's also a big supporter of the ethanol scam. I doubt seriously that he knows how to pray to the one true God.

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. -- James 5:16

By definition, liberals simply aren't righteous. Period.

The government will help the farmers. But that won’t help the public when prices go through the roof.

STOP MAKING FUEL OUT OF FOOD, at least until the drought ends.

I caught something on the news today that said despite the drought, this is expected to be the 3rd largest corn harvest ever.

Apparently its not feed corn.

.... Maybe this is "devine intervention"...drive the blood suckers to their knees.... The farm belt is on USDA life-support. Why or why are their subsidies?

If the crop cannot make a profit, then why should the general public subsidize the production?

I am sure it’s probably the largest crop planted, not so sure about the harvest until the crops come in.

I do know here in Md, it is already burned up 3/4 of the way up the stalk and the ears aren’t filling out at all.

Don't these people know that's a violation of the Separation Claws?

Corn in Michigan is wiped out. The beans may recover if those rain clouds would actually drop rain. Sigh. It looks like rain all ‘round, but nary a drop.

It’s variable here in NW Virginia. Looks good in some fields, but others are so sketchy that some of it just looks like tall grass.
