Jeff Sessions: More Americans Are Collecting Disability Than Finding Jobs
Townhall.com ^ | July 18, 2012 | Daniel Doherty

Take a look at these two charts, courtesy of the Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper:

This is an alarming trend. The United States, increasingly, is becoming a nation where more and more Americans are collecting government checks than finding jobs. And, considering only 1 percent of Social Security disability recipients ever return to the workforce (according to Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions), this disturbing tendency will have significant and perhaps sweeping implications. These numbers also come on the heels of The One’s decision last week -- as Guy explained yesterday -- to unilaterally dismantle then-President Clinton’s historic (and successful!) welfare reforms of the 1990s. This, in effect, takes a giant ax to the legislation’s work requirements, creating a disincentive for welfare recipients to seek "real" employment opportunities, and thus fostering more government dependency. Sadly, too, more Americans are on food stamps than ever before (about 45 million), and Congress seems woefully unable – or unwilling -- to work across party lines and solve the nation's fiscal challenges.

This is a crucial time for our country -- after all, this year's presidential contest could be the most important election of our lifetime -- and we need a chief executive who espouses policies that will reignite the entrepreneurial spirit of the Americans people, thereby creating economic opportunity in this country for the tens of millions of Americans who are unemployed, underemployed or have stopped looking for work. Indeed, there are stark differences between the two candidates running for president this year -- not the least of which is President Obama’s jarring conviction that entrepreneurial success in America derives not from hardworking individuals, but from government institutions. This is a philosophy we simply cannot afford for another four years.

These articles suggest that all those on disability aren’t disabled. I’m sure there are some but I don’t think it’s as rampant as some believe.

You might be surprised

“I’m sure there are some but I don’t think it’s as rampant as some believe.’

Believe me, it is rampant. These lazy, good-for-nothing slobs work harder to get on SSI or workmen’s comp than they work on their jobs.

Winning a workmen’s comp ruling is winning the lottery. They collect $3,000 a month or more and can go fishing and drink beer the rest of their short lives. Most do die in their late 40s or early 50s. They drink or eat themselves into an early grave.

The quacks and shysters who arrange this fraud need to be hanged or shot.

I live in the South - spoke to a person some time back who told me ALL 12 siblings in the family were collecting disability... A bother said to ‘go mental’ because it’s harder to disprove. The oldest in the family was - - late 40’s - the youngest late 20’s. Some in that family could collect Social Security for 70 years... The person I knew was the only one with a real disability... Puerto Rico has the highest disability acceptance rate.

I fear there’s great inconsistency in the program - with good people who need help being rejected - and scammers taking advantage...

When you look at the above numbers does it really seem to you that more than one in ten people in those southern states could be ‘disabled’?

Earned Income Credits go to people who work - I’m OK with that... The old welfare reform idea was to help people overcome dependence and helplessness. To reward them for standing on their own feet... or staring to.. Turned out the unintended consequences of welfare were destructive. Look what those liberal ideas have done to our inner cities...

Incentives to allow dignity and stop dependence are good.... Disability is going to prove to be worse than welfare for the people it traps. I don’t understand democrats - their ‘solutions’ have to do with making them feel good about themselves - not about actually helping the poor or downtrodden.

Our liberal elites are sick.

Except the scam in the hood is LaTiesha watches LaKiesha’s kids and vice versa. Just reporting enough to grab the EIC.

Check out how many storefront income tax outfits there are in your local hood next January.

No wonder when they make more money at the former than at the latter.

“I don’t understand democrats - their ‘solutions’ have to do with making them feel good about themselves - not about actually helping the poor or downtrodden.”

Democratic politicians have a vested interest in keeping people poor and downtrodden. The more poor there are, the more likely they tend to vote Democrat thus increasing their power.

To those saying that it is a scam: We’d much rather be working than unemployable due to illness. In my case, I have Parkinsons and am 63. No way I can hold down a job any more. Hung in there for years, finally caught up with me. Difference was only $400 a month between my basic SS payment and the total with disability, but it will mean a lot down the road.

And there are a lot like me. Over 55 with health issues, who have hung in there, but were laid off in the “great recession”. Now, they’re unemployed and unemployable due to age and health. The only alternative is to file for SS and disability. Not that it is a “want-to” but a “got-to” thanks to O and the administration.

8 million are no longer in the work force, and for every job in many places, 50 to 100 are applying, so only the youngest and healthiest are even considered. That is the reality today.

So for those of you whining about the “scam”, go get the facts first.

Plus, I doubt if many in the ghetto qualify. They never worked.

mmmm you don’t have to have worked to collect Social Security Disability. SSI-SSP. Look it up.

You're right - poor and broken keeps dems in office and gives the MSM sob stories so liberal elites can feel 'oh so superior' ... It's a twofer for the creepy ones.

My Grandfather was mostly deaf, had poor eyesight, and walked slowly.

He worked into his 90s because he loved it.

Now every fat POS (not counting the actual disabled) is claiming disabilities because they cant wipe their ass.

But lawyers like Bender and Bender are playing a numbers game...

If the State make it legal sell your first child for shark bait, Bender and Bender would be making money selling the contracts. This scam part of 'disability' was put together by liberal elites - a large portion of that group are lawyers.

If any of us were 'scum of the earth' types I guess we'd have to make a lot of money too - to distract us from what we were... They're only following orders... opps, I mean they're only doing what the law allows...

If there are quacks that do this then they’re making fraudulent diagnosis and putting them in the patients’ files. And I know there are some doctors out there who “know” lawyers they always work with. And the lawyer could be giving the doctor a kickback of the back pay. But that’s a whole ‘nother story. That would call for an investigation of the doctors and lawyers and, in this day and age, nobody wants to be called a racist if they happen to investigate the “wrong” doctor.

I don’t understand how one can get it without having worked. There’s a freeper on here who said he didn’t qualify because he was one quarter short.

Amen, brother! Another thing. You’ve got bad health such as a heart condition and nobody will hire you. You may be “able” to work but not as far as compay owner who has to pay your insurance is concerned.

And again, I know there are some scammers. But in this day and age, it’s not as easy as some think. They’ve really tightened up. In fact, I had a lawyer tell me he thinks they’re now rejecting all of the initial claims unless it’s so obvious the guy can’t work such as brain damage.

How about this? To get SSD you must NOT be able to work AT ALL. However, once you get on SSD you’re allowed to earn up to $15,000 a year. Does that make sense?

“I’m sure there are some but I don’t think it’s as rampant as some believe.”

Yes, yes it is. I personally know many that are on disability for no reason at all. One simply refuses to grow up and claims she has “emotional distress” becaus life “is just too hard”. Another claims her “wrist hurts” from being a bartender for 20 years. Both are on 100% disability.

There is a massive attempt to get as many on government welfare as possible; any and all welfare. The Democrats know that each is a Dem voter as when applying for benefits the propaganda doesn’t stop: “You know, it’s a good thing Obama is in the Whitehosue, Bush and the Republicans were trying to cut this program”, “Good thing a Democrat got this program funded. Bush and the Republicans were trying to cut this program.”

I know the dems want more on the government teat. But I don’t believe people are being approved for that reason. Otherwise everyone would be approved. I think I read somewhare that 90% of applicants are turned down on the first applications. And of those who appeal, only 75% will be approved and that’s with an attorney. And these stats are from a year or so. The percentages of those rejected are much higher today.

They WERE being turned down but not anymore. As has been posted here as well, Obama illegally removed to law that requires a person to seek work to collect welfare. All of this to get Dem voters.

You can’t tell us that 80,000+ people each month being approved for disability means 900,000 applied but 820,000 were turned down. That would be according to your 75% stat. They aren’t. They are being approved at an alarming rate.
