Two items today highlight the ineptitude of the administration's foreign policy.
First, David Ignatius writes: "The CIA has been working with the Syrian opposition for several weeks under a non-lethal directive that allows the United States to evaluate groups and assist them with command and control. Scores of Israeli intelligence officers are also operating along Syria's border, though they are keeping a low profile." Several weeks ?! The crisis is nearly 18 months old. Why did we wait until now to put operatives in the field?
...The Post reports on the other noteworthy and even more dismaying event: "Russia and China on Thursday vetoed a U.S.-backed United Nations Security Council resolution threatening the Syrian government with sanctions, upending four months of diplomacy aimed at stemming a crisis that has left more than 14,000 dead and engulfed the country in civil war. The action dealt a potentially fatal blow to U.N.-Arab League emissary Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan, and cast doubts that Moscow and Beijing are prepared to apply pressure on Syria to meet its commitments to constrain its troops."
Actually, it didn't "upend" anything. Th entire effort was farce from the get-go, and for the United States to continue to invite Russia and China to rebuff our pleas is nothing short of pathetic.

I really am going to bed now.
There are so many plans within plans going on, with the destruction of Israel being the main goal. Obama? What is he doing? Eating corn dogs and watching tv.
Obama is busy being a fairy twinkie, waving his limp wrist at Bain. Otherwise he is eager for the Muslim Brotherhood to take control of Syria. The sooner those Coptic Christians are exterminated, the better, as far as Obama and Hillary are concerned.
Once again...who give two sh*ts about Syria? Let them burn.
Well that’s right. Then we won’t have to hear about them anymore. Not that we’re hearing very much about them now.
That’s a hell of thing to say considering the blood we’ve spilled in Afghanistan, of all places.
What was Obama waiting for in Syria?
Someone to bow to ?
I agree.
Let it burn.
Assad is a smelly old cork that everyone wants to remove.
Once he’s gone, a truly evil genie will escape the bottle... Islamic fundamentalism.
Let the Muslim nutcases fight their own battles.
Look at Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere... Just building a global caliphate.
Getting rid of Assad will just make Syria an Islamist state.
How do we know that the CIA has only been there a few weeks. Like they are famous for telling the truth and giving details of their operations??
commander zero and his moo slim brutherhood forces will ride to the rescue.
This country is so effin' lost.
Why? Do you want more spilled in Syria? And for what?
There is an implicit assumption that the USA “should do something”. There is no consideration of the fact that others are not only “doing something” but are succeeding.
The anti government forces are not only supplied with arms and explosives but are conducting apparently well planned and executed military operations. They have defeated the government troops or at least caused them to withdraw from numerous areas....... including parts of Damascus.
There is no need for the US or Russia or China to engage. All know the problem of Assad is being solved and that any hands on engagement is not required. The UN situation is a staged event, including the hysterical theatrics of the American ambassador.
” - - - for the United States to continue to invite Russia and China to rebuff our pleas - - - “
Duh, this is Obama’s flexibility, in action.
(Maybe “inaction” is Obama flexibility?)
“Getting rid of Assad will just make Syria an Islamist state.” — I agree
I suppose Rubin does not understand who the ‘rebels’ are if she is picking good guys and bad guys in this civil war. You would think she would have bought a clue after watching what happened in Egypt.
She isn’t and doesn’t. She’s criticizing Zero and Co for their witless equivocating and blatant hypocrisy.
