Lack of exercise kills roughly as many as smoking, study says

People across the world are falling so far short on exercise that the problem has become a global pandemic, causing nearly a tenth of deaths worldwide and killing roughly as many people as smoking, researchers warned this week as an alarming series of studies was published in the Lancet.

Eight out of 10 youngsters age 13 to 15 don't get enough exercise, according to one of the Lancet studies released Tuesday, and nearly a third of adults fall short. The problem is even worse for girls and women, who are less active than boys and men, researchers found.

The results are fatal. Lack of exercise is tied to worldwide killers such as heart disease, diabetes and breast and colon cancer. If just a quarter of inactive adults got enough exercise, more than 1.3 million deaths could be prevented worldwide annually, researchers said. Half an hour of brisk walking five times a week would do the trick.

Despite its deadly consequences, lack of exercise doesn’t get the same funding or attention as other health problems, said Pedro Hallal, associate professor at the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil and author of one of the studies.

“It gets underfunded and undervalued,” Hallal said. “But it’s huge everywhere in the world.”

In the widest study ever of the scope of the problem, Hallal and his fellow researchers found that although wealthier countries are more likely to fall short on physical activity, people in countries across the globe are getting too little exercise. The new research covered 122 nations representing 89% of the world's population.

Obesity is a “disease” of affluence. In my several visits to Third World countries I can't recall having seen a fat person.

Also depends on education in this country..most people I meet with college degrees are conscious of their weight and take steps to at least keep it under control...they had ambition/perseverance/determination/self control to obtain higher degree.

Most of the people I see who are obese or overweight tend to be lower middle class or poor in this country.

95% of the people in my gym have a college degree.

I was thinking, since I exercise, I could restart smoking and it would be a wash. this is how addictive minds work.

Recliners kill more people than smoking.

Understand the mind of a liberal, you have to completely dispense with all logic and reason. Liberals, dogmatists, progressives - greeners and health nuts would have you chained to a treadmill to reduce your debilitating, cost-prohibitive extra weight costs on society, and then turn around in that same damned instant and tax the sh!t out of you because you’re producing TOO much CO2 in the process.

Look at photos of Americans in the 40’s and before. There are virtually no obese people.

As the population ages it gains weight so there are some older folks who look heavy

Homosexuals, the self-obsessed, are skinny. Baby-bearing married folks are fat.

Homosexuals - GOOD. Married folks - BAD.

The headline’s the same, they just used different words.

Maybe we’ll meet again in Hell. Maybe not.

But in this country,a visit to Walmart shows the opposite to be true.

IMO,there are two basic ways that the word "affluence" is defined in this world. One is the definition that's been embraced in the US,Europe,Japan and a few other places. The other has been embraced by most of the rest of the world. From what little I've seen it would appear that a good portion of the world's people would sell their souls to live the life of the typical WalMart shopper....or even the "poorest" of those shoppers.

Perhaps the others eat them!

I don’t smoke, drink or do drugs. I also don’t exercise. It is my life and I will live it my way regardless of the end. So just leave me to heck alone!
p.s.
Since I am a woman “of a certain age” I will be denied medical care anyway so what’s the difference?

I see most of the comments here are ridiculing the article and talking about "government forced exercise". However, there is much to be said for exercise. I was recently diagnosed as "pre-diabetic". So, I have to get my blood glucose levels down. From people I know who deal with this, and from online forums I've read, I get the impression that glucose levels are strongly linked to exercise.

I have never spent much time exercising. I stay in pretty good shape by watching what I eat, and I do a lot of yard work. However, I have never spent time on any actual exercise that gets my heart-rate up. Recently, I started riding a stationary bike. I hope that by doing a lot of miles on the bike that I can bring the sugar levels down. It's boring, but I can read or listen to archived Rush Limbaugh shows while I'm pedaling.

Quite a generalization isn't it? What about Barney Frank?? I am super fit-work out 7 days per week, eat junk food maybe 4-5 times per year and my GF can attest I am not gay...

A woman in my gym just had her fourth kid, she works out hard and her body is incredibly hot.

There is no excuse to be fat/obese in today's society especially when the health conditions that result are well documented.

Good for you..yes excercise definitely helps get glucose levels to normal levels..I work out at a gym that is part of a University/Hospital link where they send diabetic patients and many if not most get their diabetes (Type II) under control with lot's of cardio and weights if they stay committed.

I will pm you a link to as site that will help you...lot's of great info.

What about quality of life?? Feeling great, not winded going up steps, less chance of being on med's, takes away stress and feeling of depression, incredible feeling it gives you while working out and hours after..I could go on and on...

One thing that amazed me while raising my kids was seeing how few of them were out and about during the summer or school vacations.

When I was that age my friends and I were out riding bikes and playing ball from after breakfast till the street lights came on.

This generation just sits inside all the time surfing the web and playing X-box. I had to physically eject one of my kids from glowing screens and force them outside many, many times.

Same here.

We lived a block away from a park and my brother and I played basketball or baseball or tether ball (or rode our bikes all over town) all day every day.

The difference as to how you feel in living your life is as different as night and day.

When I go for a week without exercise, I feel awful by comparison. Which is why I run and/or lift weights strenuously everyday.

I am 64 and run for either 30 or 50 minutes (depending on the heat) everyday and feel cheated when I can't.
