NCAA: 'Punitive measures' await [Penn State] VIDEO
ESPN ^ | July 22, 2012 | ESPN News Sources

Posted on 07/22/2012 2:14:08 PM PDT by Third Person

NCAA president Mark Emmert has decided to punish Penn State with severe penalties likely to include a significant loss of scholarships and loss of multiple bowls, a source close to the decision told ESPN's Joe Schad on Sunday morning.

But Penn State will not receive the so-called "death penalty" that would have suspended the program for at least one year, the source said.

The penalties, however, are considered to be so harsh that the death penalty may have been preferable, the source said.

The NCAA will announce "corrective and punitive measures" for Penn State on Monday morning, it said in a statement Sunday. Emmert will reveal the sanctions at 9 a.m. ET in Indianapolis at the organization's headquarters along with Ed Ray, the chairman of the NCAA's executive committee, and Oregon State's president, the news release said.

It is expected the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and/or the NCAA Executive Committee has granted Emmert the authority to punish through nontraditional methods, the source told Schad.

The NCAA's announcement will follow a day after Penn State removed Joe Paterno's statue outside Beaver Stadium, a decision that came 10 days after the scathing report by former FBI director Louis J. Freeh found that Paterno, with three other top Penn State administrators, had concealed allegations of child sexual abuse made against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. The Freeh report concluded their motive was to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity.

The NCAA is taking unprecedented measures with the decision to penalize Penn State without the due process of a Committee on Infractions hearing.

SMU should sue the NCAA. Are little schools and private schools the only ones that the NCAA can really punish?

What impact did shutting down SMU football have on the Dallas economy? Pretty minimal....Happy Valley's economy is all about PSU football.

"...significant loss of scholarships..."

Does this mean that some talented kids will be unable to attend the school because of the school's behavior?

The Kenyan must go.

will any of these ‘measures’ ever include the requirement to keep homosexuals away from children?

didn’t think so

tough to be ‘righteous’ if you ignore the root cause of the problem.

but hey, go attack the dead guy... after all, he stomped the crap out of your favorite football team for decades... might as well get some payback

Losing scholarships and bowl games is harsh? USC lost 30 scholarships and got a 2 year ban on bowl games because Reggie Bush received gifts from sports marketers. Big deal, they're doing fine under Kiffen.

I hope the NCAA is actually planning to back up it's words with real action. Otherwise, this widely publicized leak from an unnamed source is just laying the groundwork for a pathetic slap on the wrist.

We have a winner! You broke the code! It’s all about the money. The NCAA is just like the schools that they “represent!” Just like a PE Union!

They cannot be punished enough. Will always wonder why a known pedophile was allowed to simply resign as the defensive coordinator, start a “foundation” for youth and then be allowed to bring the kids with him into locker rooms and showers. Whatever Paterno’s reason for not forcing Sandusky completely out, will never be known and since that is the case Paterno’s reputation and good name can never be restored. Also let’s hope other institutions such as the US military learn something from this sordid affair and take definitive action if the Code of Military Justice is violated. Doing nothing or coverups should be career killers including loss of pensions.

PSU will LOSE all wins dating back to 1998 season thus erasing forever JOEPA’s Legacy from NCAA Football History. History will deem MIAMI Hurricanes run a cleaner Program!

That dead guy helped cover up a pedophile who raped children in the showers. All to protect the squeaky clean image of PSU and to protect his legacy as a coach. Go ahead and defend a pedophile enabler, and that’s exactly what JoePa was.

They’ll probably make all the male athletes take off their clothes, do naked push-ups and jumping jacks until they are all sweaty, then run in a circle while NCAA officials snap at their buttocks with wet gym towels made into rat tails, to ensure they have no more homoerotic thoughts.

I shudder to think what they will do after Reggie Bush and Cam Newton. Ouch!! and then they had 81 violations at Miami— What happened there? Oohh I forgot the 8 violations at Ohio State. Boy, the Ncaa was tough there too. I just shudder at the wrath of this paper tiger where there was child rape and everyone knew about it at Ped State. Maybe race is a factor?

Which of the students in the football program held the boys so Sandusky could do them? None.

Put the guilty in jail and let the innocent play

Whatever punitive measures that are to happen I know they won't in my mind be severe enough. I doubt that anything can go on at these institutions of lower learning in an athletic dept that could be worse so now other universities have the benchmark.
