Penn State football slammed with NCAA sanctions

INDIANAPOLIS -- Penn State football was all but leveled Monday by an NCAA ruling that wiped away 14 years of coach Joe Paterno's victories and imposed a mountain of fines and penalties, crippling a program whose pedophile assistant coach spent uncounted years molesting children, sometimes on university property. The sanctions by the governing body of college sports, which capped eight months of turmoil on the central Pennsylvania campus, stopped short of delivering the "death penalty" of shutting down the sport. But the NCAA hit Penn State with $60 million in fines, ordered it out of the postseason for four years, and will cap scholarships at 20 below the normal limit for four years. The school also will be on probation for five years.

...it ticks me off that the people of PA have to pay this extortion to the NCAA BEFORE the civil suits are settled

(Then you are encouraging Penn State to appeal then...right???)

I kinda fell sorry for the juniors and seniors at Penn State, they are screwed and not just the football players either.

They have free agency. They've rec'd permission to leave. If they stay, it's on their shoulders.

(Same is true for ALL Penn State students...now that their Penn State degree has been devalued -- as in "yard sale" value -- if they choose to follow thru with a Penn State "scarlet letter" degree...so be it...They had freedom of mobility well before the 2011-2012 academic year closed out)

The NCAA as a leader of moral authority is beyond a joke!

Well, let's see, what's the alternative here?

(Oh, yeah, I forgot how many supposedly amoral lifestyle libertarians there are who frequent FR...to them, we should all turn a blind eye to porn prostitution, the drug war, and universities covering up serial child-rapists...)

McQueery was and is a coward. And you are 100% correct that most of the Penn State types do no as yet “get it”.

It's over boys and girls, your football program is toast. It will never be the same and the sooner you understand that the better off you will be. It's dead, expired, never to return. Sixed.

Paterno stayed WAY too long, his staff engaged in hero worship based on the fact that Paterno was powerful enough to fire anyone he wanted within the athletic department. Do you really believe that after 14- FOURTEEN years of Sandusky buggering the under 18 population that Paterno didn't know? Really? This was a guy who knew Penn State football for SIXTY YEARS, sixty years and he had plenty of time to do the right thing. The problem is that the Paterno legacy, the Paterno mystic was way more important than the rape of young boys by a full grown male. A full grown male that by the way had the keys to the athletic department. Who do you think gave him permission to keep the keys?

I found it amusing that people got their backs up about the statue removal. Why? Because it was shrine. If that doesn't tell you something, not only don't you get it, you will never get it.

Well, I’d better replace it, then.

Sorry squire, I’ve had a look ‘round the back of the university, and uh, we’re right out of Division 1 football.

What’s NOT being discussed is they are ALLOWED televised games.

Don’t think for a minute that the government sponsored big bureau D.C. media won’t attempt to white-wash one of their own government sponsored (like in the mega student loan program) schools. Circling the wagons, to protect their kind. Watch for it.

Killing the football program would certainly save it some money.

Your concern is more than valid, no question about it.

I’ll always be a Midshipmen fan......but watching them on TV isn’t happening anymore. That includes Army-Navy, I’m sorry to say.

My viewership helps line the pockets of the NCAA and Ped State. No more.

I think he’s a loathesome pig and I hope he’s burning in Hell along with Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd.

If the NCAA had some Spauldings, it would have zeroed out ALL of Paterno’s records.

I certainly can’t see Lou Holtz acting this way, that’s for sure.

I’m saying this as a bitter Navy fan who’s watched his beloved Naval Academy get shellacked by the Irish year after year.

You’re a 1000% right, but I don’t see reform in the future. College football and hoops are a tradition. But I don’t think the NFL and NBA should get off scot free, either.

Good thought provoking post.

Is it fair to the athletes ? Probably not, but schools like SMU have gotten a whole lot more for a whole lot less.

I'm fairly certain some players knew that something was going on. You can't be in that sort of environment and not know that something is amiss.

So the NCAA is going to start cracking down on “porn, prostitution, the drug war and serial child rapists.”? I thought they were set up to exploit poor athletes by setting up a system where these athletes generate hundreds of millions of dollars and get penalized for trading a jersey for a stupid tattoo.

How about we let THE LEGAL SYSTEM take care of the culprits. The things done in State College are CRIMES. Explain how the NCAA is set up to handle this.

What comfort does a $60,000,000.00 fine of PSU bring any of Sandusky’s victims? What does lost bowl opportunities, lost scholarships, and taking wins away from Paterno do for the victims? It may make those of us who despise PSU feel better, however, it is a slap in the face to every victim to have these things touted as any kind of adequate punishment for what they suffered. Sentencing the fiend(s) to life in jail, taking away their freedom, preventing anyone else from being victimized is the only real justice.

All of the money is going towards charities to help and prevent child abuse.

They're going to pay the Sandusky's throughout the Big Ten to shower at home.
